Capitol Hill Running Club Friends,

It really feels like Groundhog Day! Oh well—at least the good news is that warmer days are just around the corner, and every day brings us closer to spring! Yes! Still, looking at the forecast, it may be wise to wait a bit before we dig out our tanks and shorts. 😊

Today we have a very special announcement before moving on to the routes for this week.

Let’s celebrate Ray, our dear friend and the founding father of the CHRC!!!

Colonel Ray Celeste, Jr., USMC, has a Birthday coming up later this month! Ray, thank you for your friendship and for opening your heart to us. You inspire us every single day and make this world a better place. We are truly grateful to have you in our lives!

We hope this year brings you the same joy, warmth, and love that you share so freely with everyone. May it be a year filled with friendship, great adventures, and many happy runs!

As our annual tradition has it, Ray is cordially inviting us to a party! Kindly RSVP to Ray if you plan to join. Please see the message from Ray with details below.

What: You are cordially invited to Colonel Ray Celeste, Jr. USMC annual birthday party celebration for family and friends.  

Where: The esteemed Whitlow’s Restaurant, 901 U St NW, Washington, DC 20001.  

When: Saturday, 21 February from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm on the second floor.  The organic strawberry shortcake birthday cake from Whole Foods will be cut with a Marine Officers’ Mameluke sword about 7:00 pm.    

·    Food/Beverages: There will be an open bar for any draft beer, rail drinks and the House wine (red and white) up to $600.0; Nonalcoholic beverages are on the house (soda, coffee, and tea (sweetened/unsweetened)).   We will have available appetizers such as Jambalaya Pasta (as it is Mardi Gras month), beef/chicken sliders, smoked chicken wings in BBQ sauce, quesadillas, chicken tenders with French fries (always a kids’ favorite) and chips with Spinach and Artichoke dip. 

·    Parking: There is guarded parking lot at the Howard Center lot at 2235 8th Street, NW for $10.00.  You pay through your phone via a QR code. Please note that street parking is limited and metered. 

·    Metro Stop: Whitlow’s is conveniently located just two blocks from the “U” Street Metro Station(Green line) across the street from the popular 9:30 Club.  

·    Children: They are very welcome!

·    Tuesday, February 3 (6:30 a.m. from the U.S. Capitol, southwest corner of the Capitol Reflecting Pool):
Lincoln Memorial Run — 4.2 miles
Route: Head west down the National Mall along Jefferson Dr NW; continue onto the south Mall trail after crossing 14th St SW; proceed to the Lincoln Memorial; return to the Capitol via the north side trail along Madison Dr NW.

·    Thursday, February 5 (6:30 a.m. from the U.S. Capitol, southwest corner of the Capitol Reflecting Pool):
Nationals Park Run via New Jersey Ave and Independence Ave — 4 miles 
Route: Maryland AVE SW to R on 1st ST NW, L on Washington Ave SW, R on S Capitol St SE to the Nationals Park, around the Nationals Park to 1st St SE, R on M St SE, L (near the Metro station) on New Jersey Ave SE, L on Independence Ave SW, R on 1st St NW.

·    Saturday, February 7 (7:30 a.m. from the Marine Corps War Memorial, Arlington):
Capital Crescent Trail Run — out and back, distance of your choice
Route: Take N Meade St/N Lynn St over Key Bridge; R –through Francis Scott Key Park (if the path is blocked, pass by the park on M St. and immediately turn R downhill near the Ukrainian Embassy (first building) toward the foot bridge); L – onto the C&O Canal Towpath and almost immediately R- down the stairs, bear R onto a bike path towards the paved Capital Crescent Trail.
