Comic book fans all around the world will never forget the monumental fanfare that was garnered for James Gunn when he was announced to be the new creative helm for DC Studios in late 2022. Soon after, another wave of comic book fandom swept over the entertainment medium when Mr. Gunn announced a whole new slate of movies and television shows that would revitalize the wavering DCU.

In the middle of these groundbreaking announcements (and the many more that are to come), it seems that there were also a few strategic decisions made in order to entice both old and new fans to check out this reemerging comic book adaptation world.

In a marketing move that has surprised a lot of streaming enthusiasts, Warner Bros. Discovery is actually allowing some older titles to be licensed by other services, and the most recent of these occurrences could become extremely critical to any DC character or storylines that James Gunn wants to adapt for the big screen.

Starting from the second week of this month, all 52 episodes of the animated Justice League series that originally aired on Cartoon Network in 2001 as well as all 39 episodes of the sequel series, Justice League Unlimited, that was released on the same cable channel in 2004, will be available to stream on the Netflix platform.

While the original series strictly followed mainstay members of the group like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Martian Manhunter, the latter included more than fifty additional heroes. Whether the character was well-known or relatively obscure (Orion and S.T.R.I.P.E come to mind), many different faces appeared at some point, either in the original series or Unlimited.

Taking a deep dive into the many political facets and harrowing landscapes that all take place on the island before the Wonder Woman movies, a great retelling of this arc was played out in only the eighth and ninth episodes of the Justice League animated series.

Luckily for those who watch the nostalgic cartoon, all these characters are featured in a four-episode arc ending the second season of Justice League Unlimited. All the aforementioned characters are involved in a larger plot that circulates around Project Cadmus. This government agency creates and fosters all sorts of weapons to control superhumans, even if they say that they are for the betterment of society.

With villains like Lex Luthor, Amazo and Brainiac also making appearances, these episodes will bring you up to speed regarding these specific characters and why they are important to the DC universe.

In episodes 12 and 13 of Justice League Unlimited, a few members of the team travel through time in their pursuit of the wicked personification of time, Chronos. With comic book fans not only getting to see our version of the ever-popular superhero group make contact with a Western version of themselves but also seeing how DC Comics fuses that genre with superheroes is a sight to behold. You not only get to see Jonah Hex in action but learn about his personality, powers, and the environment in which he lives.

Even though numerous comic arcs from the DC universe have already been laid out on the big screen, there are many more avenues of storytelling from the superhero world left to be told as well. Whichever names are plucked by James Gunn for the big screen in the future, there is a good chance you can learn more about them from the two phenomenal Justice League animated shows that have been streaming on Netflix since May 8.

Hilda is a British-Canadian animated series based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Luke Pearson. The series debuted on September 21, 2018 on the streaming service Netflix and ran till December 07 2023 with a total of 3 seasons and 1 movie.

Produced by Silvergate Media and Mercury Filmworks, and directed by Andy Coyle, the show follows the adventures of Hilda, an 11-year-old girl who, along with her deerfox Twig, travels to the city of Trolberg, where she conquers even the most dangerous of monsters.

Hilda's creator, Luke Pearson, had previously worked in the animation industry beforehand, serving as a storyboarder on several Adventure Time episodes. When he started the graphic novel series, he didn't seriously consider it might get an animated adaptation, though he did have a few thoughts about how the character could work in animation even before he worked on the first comic. Before Luke Pearson was approached by Silvergate, there had been some interest from a few production companies about making a Hilda adaptation, though nothing had ever been agreed to. Pearson felt as if those other proposals skewed the idea of what the Hilda series is supposed to be, and that they felt off, only leaving the outer shell of the idea and changing other fundamental things.

In 2014, Silvergate producer Kurt Mueller found the graphic novel Hildafolk at a US indie bookstore in Brooklyn, New York. Producers at Silvergate loved the book, and were interested in bringing it to television.Later that year, Luke Pearson received a proposal for a Hilda animated series from Silvergate through his mail. The proposal pitch was styled as a book from Hilda's satchel in Hilda and the Bird Parade, even coming with a Trollberg library card and a small elf letter inside, as well as a wooden USB stick that contained the actual pitch. At that point, three books in the Hilda series had been published, with the 4th one, Hilda and the Black Hound, being worked on at the time. Pearson enjoyed the proposal, and soon discussions began with Silvergate. When Pearson and Silvergate started working together on a pitch, they wanted to build upon the original books while simultaneously keeping the general feel that the series had. Luke was specifically concerned in making sure the show didn't feel "too TV and formulaic."[2]

Along with head writer Stephanie Simpson, Luke and Silvergate created a pitch bible that would be used to pitch the show to various broadcasters. Some elements from the books were expanded upon to help fill out the show. For example, the characters of David and Frida were originally minor characters that appeared in Hilda and the Black Hound, but were turned into main characters for the show. Simpson specifically picked those characters out and expanded on them so they could fill out roles as Hilda's friends.
