Lets briefly review what this key file is and where it must appear. Open palette Scripts in your InDeisign and find a folder User->MT-Script-CS*->MTGateCS*. The key file (its name is MT-Script-YourKey.inf) must be there. This file you can get by automatical registration (click Keys Generator form menu MT-Script-CS** in InDesign) or by this service.

In order to accomplish the installation of GrindEQ Math Utilities you must have the Administrative Rights on your computer: right click on the executable file and select Run as administrator.

GrindEQ Math Utilities are signed with a digital certificate. If Microsoft Word Security system gives a notice about new macros found, please register GrindEQ Certificate (the registration of GrindEQ Certificate is free of charge). GrindEQ converters can be used without macros (therefore without a Certificate registration) from Save As... or Open dialogs.

Close Microsoft Word and choose the GrindEQ Options from the Windows Start menu. And then enable (or disable) optional GrindEQ Math ribbon, which will be integrated into Microsoft Word.

If GrindEQ Math ribbon is still not available, the template GrindEQ.dotm is probably blocked by other templates. Try to uncheck some templates in Templates and Add-Ins window accessed via Word Options Add-Ins Manage: Templates Go....

If GrindEQ Math ribbon is still not available, copy the template GrindEQ.dotm, which can be found in the main folder on the GrindEQ installation path, to Microsoft Word Startup folder. To locate the current Startup folder select Word Options Advanced File Locations.... Close Microsoft Word before copying the template file.

The conversion option is probably enabled in your equation editor. Use Microsoft Equation instead of Equation Editor 3.x, or you have to turn off the Convert to MathType option in MathType's Equation Conversion Manager. To run the Equation Conversion Manager, choose it from the MathType sub-menu of the Windows Start menu. A dialog will be displayed with two lists of equation types. Use the Move button to move Microsoft Equation type from the left list (Convert to MathType) to the right list (Do not convert).

Use Ghostscript driver 64-bit if and only if you have Microsoft Word 64-bit installed on your machine (open Microsoft Word, on the File tab click Account; click on the About Word button for obtaining information about your version of Office).

Equation Editor 3.x is not supported by Microsoft anymore. If you use Equation Editor 3.x, make sure it works properly (just try to create an equation). It is strongly recommended to use Microsoft Equations or MathType instead of Equation Editor 3.x.

Old versions of Microsoft Word need more time for updating Microsoft Equations. If you use Microsoft Word 2010 (or earlier), setting English as the default language of spelling will dramatically improve updating speed of your document. This does not change checking spelling of your document, so you can enable (or disable) it anytime: open Language tab of Microsoft Word Options, select English from Editing Language list, press Set as Default button, and then press OK. Note, you do not need to change Display Language and Help Language options.

If you use non-standard graphical objects in your Microsoft Word document, Word-to-LaTeX may convert them as empty rectangles. Please use freeware GrindEQ Image-to-PostScript utility to convert non-standard graphical objects to EPS format.

To allow GrindEQ Math Utilities to work properly the execution of GrindEQ should be permitted in the antivirus software settings. Note, optional GrindEQ Math ribbon contains macros. If your antivirus does not allow macros, use standard dialogs:
Save As ... LaTeX [GrindEQ]
Open ... LaTeX [GrindEQ]
Save As ... Microsoft Equation [GrindEQ]

If you cannot find a solution for your problem, send an email to our technical support department at sup...@grindeq.com. Please describe the issue and include the version number or screenshot. To see the version number, click the Info button accessed via Math Options from Microsoft Word menu or GrindEQ Options from Windows Start menu.

MathType is an application that enables you to create mathematical equationsfor use in a variety of media - documents, presentations, web pages, printmedia and more. If you've ever used Equation Editor, the OLE app bundledwith Microsoft Office, you'll understand the concept behind MathType - afterall both programs come from Design Science, a commercial entity based inLong Beach, CA, United States. Having said that, MathType is a much moreintelligent and capable program than Equation Editor - so much so that DesignScience encourages users to upgrade to MathType if Equation Editor beginsto look restrictive in aptitude. MathType is available on both the Windowsand Mac platforms - we'll examine the Windows version on this page. For allpractical purposes, the Mac version works identically.

Incidentally, this page was conceptualized while researching on the EquationEditor page - my first thoughts were to incorporate some MathType contentwithin that page - however, as I was exposed to the scope of this fine product,a separate page seemed more logical.

My contact at Design Science throughout this period has been Bob Mathews.Bob is a storehouse of information on both products and he is sure to comeup with an answer to any impossible question. I wish to thank him for allhis assistance.

In addition, Design Science also provides a full featured 30-day trial versionof the product which, in essence is the same as the download product. Theonly difference is that the ESD version includes a registration key thatis capable of converting your 30 day trial version into a full registeredcopy.

Thereafter, the setup routine also takes care of including direct toolbaricons within Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to invoke MathType. On my testsystem with PowerPoint 97, 2000 and 2002 installed, the icon showed successfullyon all the three versions. Within Microsoft Word, you get more than an icon- in fact there's a whole new MathType toolbar.

MathType comes with an excellent manual - if you have a boxed version, you'llfind a 140 page book within the contents. For those of you using the trialor ESD version, Design Science provides a PDF version of the same manual aspart of the download.

A collection of 18 exhaustive tutorials is included within the manual -the tutorials could prove very helpful if equations are important withinyour sphere of work. On the other hand, if you are of the 'I-don't-read-manuals'type, think of MathType as an equation alternative of a word processing program.

The basic MathType interface is split into two areas - the palettes andthe work area. The palettes are a collection of symbols and templates - clickany of them and the characters themselves are immediately copied to the insertionpoint within the workspace. Think of the workspace as a piece of paper -and the palettes as a virtual typewriter (or rather a keyboard!).

Sometime ago, I did a page on using Equation Editor with PowerPoint - myinitial assessment was that the program was quite capable for general use.I still hold that opinion - but Equation Editor is showing its age. Thisis all the more apparent when you start using MathType.

MathType is a different experience - it is almost a pleasure to be ableto use various colours in a single equation. Although you can use MathTypeas an OLE component from within PowerPoint (or any other application), you'llfind that the ability to export to various graphic formats from within MathTypeitself is a very welcome feature.

You might be surprised to find that there is no standard MathType format, thus assuming that one cannot save an equation and retrieve it to edit itagain in MathType. As it turns out, this assumption is wrong since MathTypeuses WMF (Windows Metafile) as its standard format for saving and openingequations. In practice, this works well - as long as you do not edit theWMF file in any other graphic application, all equations can be edited afterany period of time. Using WMF as a standard format provides some advantages- you can import WMFs into almost any Windows application. MathType alsosupports the EPS format, essential for any usage in a professional printenvironment, or to transport your equations to the Mac platform.

User experiences are a great way to find out ways in which a product isbeing used - often you can find people using a product to solve a problemin an unconventional way. I asked Bob for some testimonials - these are beingreproduced here with permission.

"I am already a MathType 5 customer and user. In fact, we are thrilledat its performance and utility in our textbook publishing application. Wewill be able cut the development cost and time of all our math and sciencebooks because of Math Type 5. Your technology and product will make a continuingcontribution to Philippine education through our best-selling textbooks whichwill have the most beautifully typeset mathematics possible today!"

Do you need to input equations electronically into any media - presentations, PDFs, web sites, documents, spreadsheets, page layout programs -event charting and diagram programs? You might not find a better solution than MathType-the program is almost a standard in the equation arena.
