Heyguys I just bought chessmaster 10th edition and was enjoying it until I upgraded to windows 10. Now my game doesn't work. I really want to keep windows 10 but everytime I clicked play nothing happened and I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it wouldn't reinstall. I kept getting an error at the very end. I really love chessmaster and I hope somebody can help me fix this so I can continue studying the art of chess.
I did what the link said Ronald and I'm pretty sure I got it installed finally but I still have the problem where I click on it, then pick the settings but after I pick the setting nothing happens. The game never starts.
It might be worth your while to ask for help on the Ubisoft Chessmaster 10 forum. On the Chessmaster 11 forum, the moderator claims to have installed CM11 on a Windows 10 tech preview. Maybe he can help you with CM10.
Thanks for posting this - I JUST tried the exact same thing and got the same results. It wouldn't work. I couldn't get it to install. I tried the admin role (I already was), compatibility troubleshooter, the whole works. Nothing. Bummer. By the way, are they EVER going to make another Chessmaster? C'mon Ubisoft Bucharest(?), help us out here!
Go here for a look. It will set up CM 9000 on a win 10 computer. Site was checked by Norton, however as ALWAYS, for every down load site, I would advise checking with more than one site checker. -
games.com/download/6808/chessmaster-9000 Slight fee required if I read the page correctly.
If it still doesn't work or if the installation of Dx9 failed in first place, go to the CD and into the "Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition" folder, then into the "Support" folder, and then "DirectX9" folder.
Now try those archives one by one by copying the dll file from inside each of them and paste it in the game installation folder and try running the game. Start with the archives that end with 86 rather than 64 , for me the april 2007 worked. If you had to try the 64 ones, then before doing that remove the 86 ones you copied earlier or change their name before copying the 64 ones.
If it still doesn't work go to the properties of Chessmaster's executable and run the compatibility troubleshooter.
I've literally gone through a minefield of issues trying to get my game installed. I finally figured out what my issues were. The error I was getting is Error 1628 Failed to Install. In order to clear that, you need to dump your C:\Windows\Temp directory. Something in the temp folder was creating the issue. Once it finished, I found compatibility mode to be a big issue also. CMX plays on Windows 10 without compatibility mode. Sometimes it will automatically install the game.exe on the drive in compatibility mode and it just won't run. If you dig into the C;\Programs Files (86x)\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition\game.exe and clear the compatibility settings, it works just fine.
I thought I'd post my recent attempts in case it might help someone. In the last few days, I decided to try to install Chessmaster 9000 and 10th Edition onto a Windows 10 Pro box that I have. My posts regarding these installs are in this thread: -chess-simulators
P.S. - @Nimzowitts, that old-games link looks interesting; If I didn't already have a legal copy of CM 9000, I might have been tempted to try it on a test box. Was anyone adventurous enough to try it?
Good heavens! I LOVE CM 9000 far better than ANY other version. O wise one! HOW did you get CM 9000 to work?? I tried EVERYTHING I Could! Yes the "old-games link looks interesting; " did indeed install CM 9000 however some features would still not work.
For instance, do the computer characters actually play at the strength of the ratings they have on chessmaster? You can play rated games and tournaments against computer characters and you earn a rating yourself.
Its not only about the program you are using, your computers speed allso effects the overall strenght of the play. But with current computers, it should play with the strenght of an GM. The ratings given to the characters are just estimations, and not very accurate ones. On my own computer i can beat the 1800 rated players constantly, while in reallife I get my ass kicked by 1800 ELO rated players.
I was wondering because I played a game on chessmaster against a 1600 something rated character and it made some pretty bad moves. It even traded a piece for a pawn just to get rid of doubled pawns. I used that extra piece advantage to win. I never see 1600's do that on
chess.com. They also don't leave their knights out to be food to creat doubled pawns to wreak their end game. It also hung a couple of pawn in the end game and the program won't resign. I really thrashed it.
I think the reason you can easily beat the lower rated players in cm is that it will give you some sort of edge to simulate a lower rating and if you are suddenly a piece up it is basically trading down all the time till you won.
I found CM 11 too glitchy and CM 10 for me, I've had it for 7 years and I have Win 7, is incredibly stable. It's pretty much the same thing but just with an updated engine and updated use for Vista/7. Even so, my Chessmaster "personality" is over 3000 while my Fritz 12 program is over 3100. Both programs are awesome imo and I've learned so much more with both of them and if you throw Chessbase 11 on top of that since they're compatible with that program PGN wise, it's awesome!
I do not agree. The thing with chessmaster is that to play with a rating e.g. 1700 the computer character that plays 1700 may make a mistake or hang a piece. if you understand to take advantage of a computer opponents mistake it is very easy to win. In addition to that you may sometimes play with a rating +300 yourself. Another factor that is very important is time How much time to give the computer to calculate moves. just giving the computer 10 minutes for the whole game it won't perform that strong as when you give it 60 minutes for the whole game.
CM is going to be around 2700, give or take. at full strength, the engine is a virtual can of whoop-booty. sure, there are other engines that are stronger, but there aren't very many human players that are. :)
I think the same goes for human opponents. If you understand to take advantage of a human opponent, which is equal to an increase in your rating, it is very easy to win. However, I agree that there is a logic behind the wrong moves of the computer. But it is similar to the case that when you are studying with tactics trainer you know that there is a good move and you can find it if you focus. Maybe Chessmaster makes the mistakes too obvious compared to an human opponent.
I'm with bobbyDK and say get Chessmaster XI. I personally haven't noticed any bugs or glitches in the program and am running Windows 7. Perhaps they got all the bugs worked out by the time I got it, which was earlier this year. I downloaded it from Ubisoft for $20.
The only thing about downloading the program is that you don't get any installation disks in case your computer crashes. I saved the installation files to a flash drive so I can reinstall if the need arises.
Chess master gm edition is mochary. I have beatin every single bot up to 2100 lvl but am only ranked 1250 against human players. My rating in that game is around 1900 against those bots... big difference. I also played the intermediate study serious, which evaluates all of your skills from, tactics, checkmates, strategy ect... In every single skill set I am ranked above 1600. Then I go and play a game against a human way lower then what my strength indicates.. and get my butt kicked...chess master gm is good for raising your self esteem maybe but has nothing to do with rating accuracy.
I've found it to be quite the opposite. My USCF and
chess.com live rating seems to hang out in the 1500's, while my chessmaster rating is in the 1300's. Some days I can beat the higher rated players, but others the lower rated players never make a mistake, or they will make a mistake and I'll be a piece up, then they play like a GM the rest of the game.
I've notices that as well while I can sometimes beat 1700 rated chessmaster players I have had my lunch handed to me by the 1200 waitzkin character.... after beating the 1300 and 1400 versions... I have a grudge against the 1200 because the W/L is in his favor... think its called like Josh Age 6 or some garbage which just makes it more infuriating.... also my real life USCF rating hovers about 200 points higher than my chessmaster rating because of things like this and because when I play it I often play characters well out of my league
More than ever, Chessmaster 10th Edition delivers on its promise to make you a better chess player. The program will improve your game regardless of your level of experience. This landmark edition provides the largest upgrade ever to the features and graphics of the franchise. Whether you are new to chess or a tournament-level player, Chessmaster 10th Edition allows you to master history's greatest game.
Install the game, after that install the patch. Optionally install NoCD. The game with Patch v1.03 has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit, installer worked slowly but the game itself runs with no problem.
