Dear Jinan,

One question that keeps cropping up is , do crafts persons wish to continue in the profession ? The nex gen have higher aspirations.

Haven't practitioners of other traditional callings, like priests, farmers, book keepers, teachers, alchemists, vaids, minstrels, shepherds, story tellers, cattle herders, toddy tappers, honey gatherers, wrestlers, acrobats, street entertainers, dhobis, tailors, barbers, musicians etc., moved away from the professions of their elders and joined the juggernaut of modern technology driven economy ?

Is it a romanticised idea, far removed from reality that we are trying to pursue ?

NO..

What you are attempting is very similar to Noah's Ark or the Matsya Avatara during the Great Deluge.

My firm belief is that we should search far and wide for that craftsman who is prepared to be the prime mover. Most of us are arm chair connoisseurs of craft with little in depth understanding of all that goes into making an artisan.

You are living your passion of giving craft a new breath of life.I believe that the task that you, Uzramma of Dastkar,Gopi, Guruji ( Shri Ravindra Sharma of Adilabad) and maybe some others unknown to us have undertaken, will take several life times of persistent effort to have a lasting impact.

Let us be prepared for it. Be prepared to take the slips and pitfalls of monetary lucre that will lure away the most die- hard craft supporters amongst us.(eg.Powerloom cannibalising on handlooms) We need to create a small passionate cult of believers in craft, its philosophy, its economic reality and benefit to the community at large.

Results, as we foresee may not be forthcoming, in the near future, but persevere, we must.

One way,to raise funds for enable artisan could be to find blank walls for murals, a percentage of the sale could be set aside for this corpus.

BASH ON REGARDLESS !!

Dear friends
As you can see I haven't written to you for a long time. I have not been successful in getting anyone to work as assistant  coordinator.  But in general other areas is showing promise. last four months as Kumbham was in a crisis I focused my attention on to developing new products and we have made really very good impression in the market. we just made high quality kitchen ware and did exhibitions in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. We did extreamly well. Looking at the market response I think in general the enable artisan project could also take this directions as far as product development is concerned.
So do help me in finding a person. I was thinking of paying about Rs 15 to 20 thousand per month. That person needs to be stationed in Trichur. Please take a look at the images at the link http://picasaweb.google.co.in/claymurals/TerracottaWareForCookingMicrowaveEtc
Regarding funds I have only Rs 87,000 till date. many more people have promised. Some have promised their time and some people are willing to contribute monthly.
Bhavana is working on the site and you can see the first page now.
I am sending this mail to all the people who have shown interest in the project and I hope you wont mind a 'reply all'.as I want all of you to know each others response.
I think a dialog between all of us will help in getting to know each other and for future collaboration for the project. If you don't mind a brief two line introduction would help. other alternative is to join the enable artisan google group.

Do let me know
