Thank you for your interest in Lions Park,
I’m excited to report that new playground equipment for Lions Park has been ordered and is scheduled to be installed beginning August 20th with an expected opening in October! Below please find a construction schedule and photos of the climbing rock/slide and rotating net, two of the components that will be installed. Recognizing that having no play equipment in the park during construction will have an impact on the neighborhood, we will do everything possible to meet or beat this schedule. In the meantime, playgrounds remain open at Bigelow, Decatur Woods, Friendly Grove, Harry Fain’s Legion, LBA, Priest Point, Sunrise, and Yauger parks – Here’s a link to information on those parks: http://olympiawa.gov/city-services/parks/parks-and-trails.aspx
As to the specific playground design, the sandbox that was included in the preliminary design presented at the public meeting in May was eliminated and replaced with overhead rings and “Skywheels”. These elements will provide an overhead climbing experience which was requested by participants at the meeting. A rock/log course was also added to create a bit more connectivity between the elements, also feedback received at the public meeting. The new playground will have elements for both 2-5 year-olds and 5-12 year-olds, be ADA compliant, and have wood fiber fall protection encircled with a concrete border flush with the ground.
The design for the remainder of the park improvements has not been finalized. Those improvements are still scheduled to be implemented in 2011. I will keep you posted as those plans progress.
Thank you again for your interest and participation in the process, and please let me know if you have any questions.
