11-6-11 En la casa - In the house

“En una casa grande, no solamente hay objetos de oro y de plata, sino
también de madera y de barro; unos son para usos especiales y otros
para uso común. Si uno se mantiene limpio de esas faltas, será como un
objeto precioso, consagrado y útil al Señor, apropiado para cualquier
cosa buena.” (2 Timoteo 2: 20-21)

Es interesante cómo Pablo describe la iglesia. En un momento él
compara la composición y funciones de la iglesia como miembros de un
cuerpo. En este pasaje nos compara a utensilios en una casa grande.
Cada uno de nosotros está hecho de algún material particular para un
uso específico. Algunos son para el uso diario; son resistentes a
golpes, son los que pueden resistir el paso del tiempo, que se
utilizan una y otra vez. Algunos son tan frágiles que tienen que ser
guardados y protegidos. Ellos son los que tenemos que abrazar con amor
y apreciarlos por su vulnerabilidad; hay que cubrirlos en oración y
mantenerlos cerca de nuestros corazones. No importa si somos como el
tazón de cerámica que se utiliza para servir a una buena porción de
chile con carne, que seamos como el plato de sopa fino, de lujo, que
sólo se saca en ocasiones especiales, cada uno tiene una función
especial y debemos seguir el consejo de Pablo,
“Huye de las pasiones de la juventud, y busca la justicia, la fe, el
amor y la paz, junto con todos los que con un corazón limpio invocan
al Señor. No hagas caso de discusiones que no tienen ton ni son; ya
sabes que terminan en peleas. Y un siervo del Señor no debe andar en
peleas; al contrario, debe ser bueno con todos. Debe ser apto para
enseñar; debe tener paciencia y corregir con corazón humilde a los
rebeldes, esperando que Dios haga que se vuelvan a él y conozcan la
verdad, a fin de que se despierten y escapen de la trampa en que el
diablo los tiene presos para hacer de ellos lo que quiera. (2 Timoteo
2: 22-26)

“Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver bowls, but
also those of wood and earthenware, some for special use, some for
ordinary. So if anyone purifies himself from these things, he will be
a special instrument, set apart, useful to the Master, prepared for
every good work.” (2 timothy 20-21)

It is interesting how Paul describes the church. At one point he
compares the composition and functions of the church as members of a
body. In this passage he compares us to bowls in a large house. Each
of us is made of a particular material for a specific use. Some are
for daily use; the hardy ones, the ones who can stand the test of
time; that can be used again and again. Some are so fragile that they
have to be set aside and protected. They are the ones that we have to
embrace with love and cherish for their vulnerability, cover them in
prayer and keep them close to our hearts. Whether we are like the
ceramic bowl that we use to serve a hearty serving of chili or the
fancy soup tureen that only gets taken out on special occasions, we
each have a function and we need to heed Paul’s advice,
“Flee from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faith, love,
and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
But reject foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they breed
quarrels. The Lord's slave must not quarrel, but must be gentle to
everyone, able to teach, and patient, instructing his opponents with
gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance to know the
truth. Then they may come to their senses and escape the Devil's
trap, having been captured by him to do his will.” (2 timothy 2:
22-26)
