While reading “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain, I notice
how incredibly different Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer think and act. For
most of Huck’s life he was on his own. Since he basically raised
himself he knows the realities of the world and how dangerous it can
be for a young boy. Huck is a thinker. He listens to what people tell
him, for instance when the widow takes Huck in to raise him, she tries
to teach him about prayer. He prayed and thought about how it works
and prays for fish hooks that never came. Although he quit praying he
continues to think about why the fishhooks never came. He analyzes and
learns while Tom is busy reading books and playing games. Tom does not
listen to his family. He sneaks out to meet with Huck and disobeys
because he values Huck’s lifestyle. Tom likes to read about pirates
and robbing people. Tom is being a typical boy making clubs and gangs
which is fine. Tom wants to explore and be a young boy but his friend
Huck is in a different situation. Huck on the other hand is living a
true example of the crazy adventures Tom is merely imagining. Tom
wants to rob people and kill but Huck is being robbed by his own
father and nearly beaten to death. The situation Huck is in makes him
twice as mature as young Tom. When Huck had enough beatings from his
father he escaped while Tom was simply escaping to feel rebellious.
The two boys are the same age but on two different levels of maturity.
