Dear Benoit,

Thanks for pointing it out. It is due to a conflict with Ubuntu's default qtgui style.

Therefore it can be fixed with:
% sudo apt-get install qt4-qtconfig
run qtconfig
% qtconfig
a Window pops up. ’Select GUI style’ from ‘Gtk+’ to ‘Cleanlooks’
reboot and it should work without complaints.

Best wishes,

Carsten

Dear Carsten
I would like to try to use spring. I have downloaded the latest version yesterday and followed instructions for installation from binaries under linux. The 4 tests ran without making error. I added spring bin path to my PATH.
when I run spring, problems occur:
the spring window does not display correctly, and I get a gtk error in the terminal. This error is spit constantly:
(python:31109): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
The spring window is not very reactive and the whole system gets slow and unstable. Moreover some fields in the window are obviously missing. For example I cannot select the folder with the micrographs
This is the output of spring --version && springenv e2version.py
Spring environment loaded.
GUI from package Emspring-0.84.1470
Spring environment loaded.
EMAN 2.1 alpha2 (CVS 2013/08/07 17:01:09)
Your EMAN2 is running on:  Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS 3.13.0-71-generic x86_64
Your Python version is:  2.7.2
Note that I tried to run spring under two desktop environments on the same computer with Ubuntu 14.04: Unity, and XFCE. The results are worse in XFCE than in Unity (less elements of the spring window are displayed, the window is super wide, possibly 4-desktop wide) but even in Unity (the standard desktop environment of ubuntu) the GUI is doing the error mentioned above and not displaying correctly.
Do you have any ideas what could be going wrong? Do I miss some gtk related packages?
Thanks and best wishes
Ben

Dear all,
for me changing the GUI style from Gtk+ to Cleanlooks causes a minor problem with the colors of pop up description (when hovering the mouse over the input fields). The text becomes white against yellow background, which results in very poor contrast. This can be fixed by setting (any) colour to background: qtconfig -> Appearance -> Build Palette ->Window Background  and select any colour (I just selected the default colour and press OK), which turned the text colour to black (against yellow background).
