We are thinking of bumping emscripten's minimum supported python version from 3.6. to 3.8: https://github.com/emscripten-core/emscripten/pull/23417.

This is enough to support the current debian/stable (bookworm) and ubuntu/LTS (focal), but I wonder if there are other folks out there still running emscripten on older systems that don't have python >= 3.8?

I'll leave the PR open for a week or so to give folks time to chime in.

cheers,
sam

I'm building a product around CPython 3.7. I hope you can wait a while. 🙏 please

Hi Brad,

Thanks for getting back to me.  I don't think there is any hurry here and we can delay this.

Are you trying to run the emscripten compiler itself inside the product?  i.e. using python3.7.?

cheers,
sam

Good question, good point. I'm using Emscripten to build CPython 3.7 into my product as something that runs in the browser. Which python Emscripten uses probably does not matter. Should have thought of this. Anyway, thanks for the good work!

Yes, that sounds completely separate.   Good to know.

I approve in principle given I use fedora41. Also see this rant of
mine about old perl versions:

I'm working on Rocky Linux 8.10, which has Python 3.6.8. I should be able to get the Python upgraded if necessary, but Rocky/RHEL/Alma 8.10 are going to be in commercial use for another 4+ years until they reach EoL in May 2029.
