NEMSIS to HL7 C-CDA Unstructured Document Transformation Published

I have published a new XSL transformation that converts a NEMSIS patient care report to an HL7 C-CDA Unstructured Document.

 

Along with the transformation file, I’ve added a pair of sample documents: a NEMSIS patient care report and the resulting HL7 C-CDA Unstructured Document output.

This is the simplest kind of transformation that can be used to move NEMSIS PCR data to an HL7 C-CDA format. It expects the NEMSIS document to contain an unstructured version of the PCR (such as in PDF or HTML format) in eOther.FileGroup. Though simple, it moves interoperability forward in a couple of ways:

 

1. Any hospital system should be capable of receiving a C-CDA Unstructured Document and attaching it to a patient’s hospital record. In fact, we have learned that many hospital clinicians prefer to receive an unstructured document.
2. It establishes a number of decisions about how to construct the HL7 C-CDA Header using data from a NEMSIS document.

 

I’m scoping work to develop additional transformations from NEMSIS to HL7 structured documents, such as Continuity of Care Document (CCD), Transfer Summary, and HL7 CDA EMS PCR. I welcome input regarding which one to do first. And of course, I welcome feedback on this transformation, especially regarding the information in the HL7 C-CDA Header.
