Manual Clustering support in Open source emqx broker

How do we add more nodes to existing cluster ? should cluster be downed before adding (or) removing a node ?

Also, what if initially we start with single node and then expand to multiple nodes ?

Should the single node be bring down before any changes ? (or) does it work sync ?

Also, how do clients knows a new node is available for them to connect ?
