Unemployment in Spain peaked at 27 percent in 2013, and was 14 percent early in 2019. Labor law changes in 2012 that made it easier to fire workers are credited with job growth, but salaries in new jobs are often low, frustrating workers who are earning less in 2019 than they earned before the 2008-09 recession. Many young people can get only temporary contracts that offer them employment for a few weeks or months. Frustration with slow income growth is fueling support for populist parties.
