In Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter we play the role of the commander of a squadron of American destroyers, whose task is to hunt German U-Boats in the Atlantic Ocean. Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter is a production bordering on simulation and a war thriller adventure game. The title was developed by the independent Polish team Iron Wolf Studio, whose portfolio includes such projects as 911 Operator: Interactive Movie and the board game U-Boot: The Board Game. Plot The action of Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter takes place during World War II, specifically – during the Battle of the Atlantic, which lasted from September 3, 1939 to May 1945. During the game, we take on the role of the commander of a squadron of American destroyers serving on board a Fletcher-class ship. As the title of the game suggests, our primary task is to hunt Nazi submarines called U-boats. During the game, we make decisions that affect not only the results of subsequent battles, but also the course of the plot. Mechanics Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter offers two gameplay variants. In the simulation mode, we are responsible for all issues related to the activities carried out by our squadron. So we listen to reports about detected enemy units and, using authentic equipment, we plan and carry out further attacks. The title allows us to manually operate the complex equipment installed on board our Fletcher; so we have to control the sonar and radar readings, plot the enemy’s coordinates on the map ourselves, and determine the course and speed of the ship on this basis. At the same time, our ship’s actions must be coordinated with the orders we give to our allies; this is the only way to avoid falling into the trap of the so-called wolf packs, which are just waiting for one of our units to separate from the rest of the squadron. Since we do not control a light and fast motorboat, but a heavy and quite slow ship, the title allows us to speed up the passage of time (which is useful, among others, when we are just sailing to meet U-boats).
