Campaigning gains momentum in TN, Puducherry, Kerala & WB

In Tamil Nadu, the campaigning has gained momentum for the April 13
Assembly elections. AIADMK Cheif J Jayalalitha addressed several
meetings in southern districts on Sunday. CPM leader Sitaram Yechury
addressed a public meeting in Dindigul.
AIR correspondent reports, one of the important districts of southern
Tamil Nadu is Tirunelveli, where for ten assembly segments there are
124 candidates in the election fray. People of Tiruneveli have
complained of the lack of proper industrial infrastructure and unkept
promises for this region. The political atmosphere on the streets is
the same as other places in the state. Without any poster, campaigning
been going on with several meeting by star leaders in a day.
Meanwhile, the election commission has conducted a training program
for 3 and a half lakh government officials throughout the state who
are taking part in the elections.
The district wise flying squads are busy in their search and seizure
operations while media monitoring units are working round the clock at
the district headquarters. The polling officers are also on job
providing voter slips.
The strict restriction of the election commission has changed the mode
of campaigning but also initiated discussion among people of cross
sections.
In Puducherry, door to door canvassing and road shows, by candidates
and political parties continue to dominate the campaigning. With
election authorities keeping a close watch on poll expenditure and
violations of the model code of conduct, the festive atmosphere
usually associated with the elections is missing.
AIR correspondent reports, personal attacks among contestants is
conspicuously absent in Puducherry, a small union territory with an
electorate of little over 8 lakhs. The political leaders here share a
rare camaraderie.
The electorate size of the biggest constituency is just 31,000.
Meanwhile, the election department has geared up its machinery to
distribute voter slips to every household from Tuesday. The
distribution would continue till the Friday.
Puducherry is the only state in the coming elections where voters
possessing photo identity cards, only will be allowed to vote. The
Election commission had organized special camps to issue duplicate
photo identity cards to voters who had lost their cards.
The congress party is leading a front comprising of the DMK, PMK and
VCK while the NR congress is heading an alliance with the AIADMK, DMDK
and CPI and CPM as partners.
AIR correspondent reports, the dull campaign will surely gather pace
as national leaders descend in the union territory to address big
election rallies, far and few in this election.
While congress President Mrs Sonia Gandhi is arriving in Puducherry on
Tuesday, the party general secretary Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to
address an rally on the 8th , to boost the chances of the Congress and
its allies
The BJP which is working on a strategy to gain a foothold in the
southern most part of the country is contesting 18 seats independently
BJP leaders Nitin Gadkari and Sushma Swaraj are expected to campaign
in the next couple of days.
With the DMK and AIADMK playing the role of a junior partner in the
front they figure in, the battle in the Union territory is between the
Congress party and the newly formed political party floated by Ex
congress Chief Minister Mr N.Rangaswamy.
The winning of this election is crucial to both the parties.
In Kerala, with only a week left for assembly polls, campaigning by
all major political parties have reached a feverish pitch. The main
tussle to capture power to the 140 member state assembly is between
CPIM led LDF and Congress led UDF.
AIR correspondent reports, the BJP has also unleashed a intense
campaign using all top national leaders.
The young voters of Kerala have reasons to rejoice. Record number of
young and fresh candidates are in the fray. Out of 971 candidates
fighting the election, 260 are below the age of 40.
At the same time, the number of candidates above the age of 60 years
comes to 150. At the age of 91, K.R. Gouriamma is contesting from
Cherthala constituency in Alappuzha.
It is her 17th election. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan who is
contesting from Malampuzha is more than active at the age of 87. In
their effort to empower own fraternity 74 women candidates are seeking
vote in Kerala.
In West Bengal today is the last day for withdrawal of candidature for
first phase Assembly Election in the State. Altogether 418 nominations
were filed for this phase of polls which will take place in 54 seats
covering six North Bengal Districts on 18th of this month.
Meanwhile, filing of nominations are on for second and third phase of
elections. Second phase of voting will be taken up in 54 seats in
Murshidabad, Nadia and Birbhum districts on 23rd of this month while
third phase will be held on 27th of April in 75 seats in Kolkatta,
North and South 24 Paragana districts.

in North Bengal were first phase elections are offing.
