Hi All

Good Morning - Can I introduce myself as it is th efirst time I have
posted to this group.

I am Neil Morris, 53, an Education, Training and Development Specialist
from South Yorkshire and a survivor of mental health and Ihave been
awarded a Travelling Fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial
Trust, here in the UK.

I am currently visiting projects in New Zealand and Australia in
September and October to research ideas for a Man to Mentor programme.
I want to build on my professional expertise and personal experience to
explore how men recovering from a mental health illness are engaged in
training and education as part of their rehabilitation and then through
volunteering are moved back into mainstream.

Currently I am in Auckland New Zealand at a Mentall Health Conference
and today came across an issue which is flavour of the month out here -
Peer Support Workers, it is an extremely different concept to Community
Support Workers or Recovery Workers.

PSWs are refered to as Consumer (Service User) Consultants who have a
'lived experience' of Mental Health and work with in a paid role with
other Consumers of Mental Health Services. They work both for the NGO
sector and in Mental Health teams.

My request for help is

Do we have PSW's in the UK?

and if so does anyone know of where they exist, how effective they are,
etc.

Regards

Neil

Hi Neil

We have Support Time Recovery Workers in our trust, these are people
from all walks of live either with or without mental health experience
and they are there to help and support our service users for example if
a service user had a fear opening their post a STR worker would take
time and arrange to be there to open the service users post and over a
period of time with support to help the service user open their own
post. There is information on the Department of Health website on the
Support Time Recovery Workers role. Hope this is of some help.

Hi Neil

We are one of the first Menatl Health Trusts in the UK who have started
to train peer support workers and are now exploring how they may be used
within our Services as employees and in other roles. If you would like
to discuss further please contact me on 07879 605107 and I can put you
in touch with colleagues who can provide you with more information.

Hi
I work for a mental health charity in Bolton, we have mental health service users who are employed by our Community as part of their recovery, they are able to support newer service users due to the experiences they themselves have been through, hope this helps.
