A huge number of popular packed foods such as Maggi noodles, biscuits etc and even other products such as toothpaste, soaps etc contain animal fat in them, that too, mostly PIG FAT. It has become a big issue in Islamic countries where Pig-meat is forbidden. This is not a rumor, you can verify it by searching for "E 631" or "E 635" in google. These are code names for flavoring agents used in several popular foods. Infact, a lot of such animal-derived flavoring agents are used in some very popular foods such as - Cadbury Dairy milk Maggi nodles Parle G biscuits Sunfeast biscuits Lays chips Britannia biscuits Priya Gold This above list is just an example. Please see this article - A list of E-numbered food additives not suitable for vegetarians- http://www.veggieglobal.com/nutr... and check the "ingredients" list of all packed food items that you buy to check for any of these non-vegetarian additives. For example, Pepsico claims that E631 used in Lays chips is not derived from Pig fat, but from Tapioca plant. Tapioca is a flavorless, colorless, odorless starch extracted from the root of the plant species Manihot esculenta (cassava), whereas E631 is a strong flavoring agent. If you do not know what is Tapioca, it is the same thing which is used to make Tapioca-pearls or "Sabu-dana" (or Sagu-dana). It is tough for me to digest that such a strong flavoring agent is derived from a flavorless and odorless plant. Also note that the companies selling these products make a lot of claims that these additives are not from animal sources, but I have done some online search on this and found that their claims are very weak and illogical and do not stand against the claims of independent scientists and researchers.
