Subject: olympiad formula sheet
Dear Mike,
I hope you've had time to recover from the Olympiad. The students and I
had a great time and were very impressed with the students' preparation!
As we discussed when we turned in our results for Astronomy, I had a
concern about incorrect formulas and values in an online resource the
students were using? This is found on a science Olympiad "wiki" -- I'm
not sure if there are other errors, but the ones that jumped out at me
were both on the second page: the Hubble constant, given as 20 km/s/Mpc
(should be 70 km/s/Mpc, which is correctly given later down the same
page!), and the Luminosity formula (the R term should be raised to the
second power and the T term should be to the fourth power -- maybe this
was a formatting mistake, but those powers are completely missing!):

I saw several groups with this sheet in their binders, which is
convenient to use, but not if it is wrong. Most of them as I walked
around, I saw and told them to correct it ... we also checked them all
as they turned them in. One group said they knew it was wrong and fixed
it themselves! I'm referring to the Hubble constant, I didn't have them
use a luminosity formula this year...
Anyway, not sure who to tell, but it would be great for teams not to
have this as a handicap in the future! Thanks a bunch if you know who
to share this with!
Cheers,
Amy
