Holding signs that read, “We are Hesston Strong,” more than 800 members of the Hesston, Kan., community capped last evening’s service of sorrow and hope singing “Amazing Grace.” In the wake of a shooting rampage that began in Newton, Kan., and ended in Hesston on Feb. 25, the community came together in the way Mennonites do best, in fellowship and song.

Shalom justice: Reflections on events in Hesston


It’s been a crazy last couple of days. Hearing the gun shots in my kitchen that afternoon, I shook my head at whoever that silly hunter was out there. “Someone’s hunting too close to town,” I said to myself. Then…the text message that Hesston College was on lockdown, the sirens, the people running past my house. I was motionless, in disbelief.

When I read Psalm 63, I feel grounded in the long, arching narrative of God’s people living in the world. The scriptures, and this psalm in particular, have been part of the human story for thousands of years. Long after the time of David, when this psalm was initially written, the early church chose it as the morning reading to begin their weekly worship.

Efforts continue to bring back Pastor Max Villatoro


Members of Central Plains Mennonite Conference and Mennonite Central Committee Washington are continuing their efforts to reunite Max Villatoro with his family. Villatoro, a Mennonite pastor from Iowa City, was deported to Honduras by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 20, 2015.

A tribute to Steve Cheramie Risingsun


A gentle funny giant who loved the church with all of his heart–that is how I will remember my friend Steve Cheramie Risingsun. Steve died in his sleep Feb. 20, 2016. Now I know some of you who know me may say, isn’t everyone you know a giant next to you? Steve was about 5 feet 10 inches tall, and that’s a giant to me.
