Please join us for a workshop that introduces dominant food system trends and their impacts.
Phil is a professor in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University and a member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems. Phil has been researching the consolidation of the food system since the late 1990s, which has resulted in fewer people making decisions about much of the food we eat. This workshop introduces these trends and their impacts, with a focus on seeds, beer, meat processing, and organic brands. Phil will also describe growing counter-trends toward food sovereignty and diversity, and how we can strengthen these efforts.
"About a third of the food sold in the US comes from just 10 firms. This is resulting in fewer and fewer people making decisions about the food we eat. I think an ideal food future would be far less concentrated, it would be much more democratic. It would give voice to all the actors in the food system."
