A new book study facilitated by Don Smith begins on at 10 a.m., Friday, October 7,
on ZOOM and in person at the Mennonite Meeting House/Beltram Peace Center.
Until his retirement, Don was the senior trainer for the Great Books Foundation.

Text: The Land Is Not Empty: Following Jesus in Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery by Sarah Augustine,
an Indigenous woman who tells how she discovered the history of the attempted cultural destruction of her people.

The txt is available wherever books are sold, or directly from Herald Press.

The first session will be set up so that people can participate even if they haven’t read the 1st assignment in advance.

A note from Don:

The Doctrine of Discovery is a theological, philosophical, and legal framework dating to the fifteenth century
that gave Christian governments moral and legal right to invade and seize Indigenous lands and dominate Indigenous Peoples.
This pattern of oppression began with papal bulls or decrees.
It still acts as the legal foundation for the seizure of indigenous land.

The Doctrine of Discovery formed the deep structure of colonization that continues to oppress Indigenous Peoples and dispossess them of their land today. These decrees dictating who was able to own land in colonized countries became the basis of international law
and most Western countries incorporated this international law into their national laws and policies as well (pp. 27-28)
