Hello,
Someone reached out to me who is exploring a pilot of an off-leash area in Springdale Park.  He is looking for guidance on how to proceed.  I referred him to the group who is working for an off-leash area in Mueller.  But I was wondering if anyone else in the group has more insight into steps to make something like this happen.  I believe Springdale Park falls under the Springdale Airport Neighborhood Association but it is adjacent to SHAWNA and I am in support of this idea.

Thoughts and info appreciated.

Hi Cristina,
Is this in District 3? I would reach out to your Councilmember's office as I have had good experiences working with CM Velasquez's office on things.

I have the same contact regarding the off leash area in Mueller. Only thing I would mention is that it seems it has taken them quite some time to get any movement on it, so like with many of these kinds of projects, patience is helpful.

Our dog park in the Little Walnut Creek Greenbelt Playground has been quite well utilized and the dog owners I've talked to enjoy it! It is along Springdale on the east side of the street, where Norwood Hill dead ends. There is a gate between two sides, so smaller dogs can have their space and larger ones are separated. Not exactly the same thing, but I think whoever is trying to organize it can use these examples to confirm that there are a lot of dog owners and people who enjoy using our parks with their pups!

Have a good day,
Nadia

Hi,

Agreed on reaching out to the Council Office! Springdale Park is in District 1.

Mueller might be different since most of their property is managed by a community association. But City processes are certainly not quick...

This sounds like a good opportunity to utilize the park.

Hello,
I can see several potential benefits to a designated off-leash area, including providing dogs with a safe place to exercise and socialize, supporting responsible pet ownership, and potentially reducing off leash activity in areas where dogs are currently required to be leashed. At the same time, I think it's important to consider possible negative impacts. Not all residents are comfortable around dogs. And some may have fears or past experiences that make close contact stressful. Others use the parks for quiet recreation, walking, or for children, and would want reassurance that their space remains safe and predictable. For these reasons, I feel strongly that if an off-leash pilot is pursued, the area should be fully fenced and clearly marked. I appreciate the association's willingness to gather input and hope these considerations can be part of the discussion as plans move forward.

Thanks-Dianna
