This affects our area but it's not clear what it even means and exactly where this is happening.  Does anyone have more info that might have a map or diagram?

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be digging deep as construction on the I-35 Capital Express Central project advances with the launch of the Drainage Tunnel and Pump Station segment in May 2025.

Crews will construct 22-foot diameter drainage tunnels that will extend 6.5 miles between Airport Boulevard and Holly Street; and along Cesar Chavez Street, from I-35 to US 183. Drop shafts will also be added along I-35 to ensure proper maintenance and operational access to the new infrastructure. The segment will also include the construction of a pump station to improve stormwater management along the corridor.

Construction will include:

  • Phase I: Utility relocation and site work at Airport Boulevard, 15th Street, Brushy Street and River Street drop shafts and the Cesar Chavez/I-35 junction; excavate Airport Boulevard and 11th Street drop shafts and Cesar Chavez/I-35 junction; install geotechnical monitoring equipment.
  • Phase II: Excavate 15th Street, Cesar Chavez Street and River Street drop shafts.
  • Phase III: Relocate utilities at Hancock Center, Edgewood Avenue and 11th Street drop shafts; launch tunnel boring machines; excavate Hancock Center, Edgewood Avenue and Brushy Street drop shafts.
  • Phase IV: Establish tunnel connections from drop shafts; restore drop shaft sites; install final tunnel lining.

The Drainage Tunnel and Pump Station segment is expected to be complete in 2029, weather permitting.

Visit the Drainage Tunnel and Pump Station segment page to learn more or sign up for notifications.

Road signs have been placed to alert drivers of the upcoming work. TxDOT asks drivers to be patient and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.

Best regards,

I-35 Capital Express Central Project Team

Hi Cristina,
Thanks for forwarding this to the group!
I see a map there:

This is a bit west of us, but I'm sure we all travel all around here.
There are some other parts that impact us too- the MLK / I35 intersection and Dean Keaton / I35 will change quite a bit, but it doesn't seem like those parts of the project have started yet. I guess they have to start with the drainage first, maybe?

It appears that this work will be in 4 stages but it may divert East/West traffic to other major streets in our area resulting in congestion in some areas already under construction.
