Im a book cover designer and art director based in New York and New Mexico. I've been blogging about home renovation, interiors, graphic design, DIY, food, cosmetics, dogs, art, music, books, and life in general since 1998. I could really use a cup of coffee right now.
I loved Series 1; it is one of the most well constructed dramas on TV. The characters are quirky but wonderfully real at the same time and it grabs you emotionally. I am lucky enough to have watched Series 2 and it is as good as the first, although devastating to watch. I will keep a look out for the Tunnel though.
I also love Bron. So far I have only seen season 2 through a Swedish streaming service we subscribe to which was great! Thanks for the tip on where to watch season 1! Hopefully your post will encourage more people to watch.
Hi Jenny; Sherlock by the BBC is very good, The Line of Duty (BBC) is really really great as well. Great as in Smart. LoD we are watching the second series at the moment. The series are pretty short but it is absolutely amazing, both of them. Enjoy!
Netflix has been terrible for my appreciation of American TV, which was already hovering at an all-time low. The appearance of the actors on shows outside the US is so damn compelling and refreshing. I love the scars, the wrinkles, the appearance of life lived, especially in the crime dramas. American TV actors look like Dorian Gray in comparison.
I find it quite puzzeling, why such violent and gruesome crime fiction is produced in Scandinavia, which has quite a low murder rate. If people were killing each other at the rate suggested in the fictitious material, the northern countries would find their populations severely depleted.
Hi: I just finished watching Season 1 of The Bridge. It was recommended to me by my daughter-in-law, who knows I like foreign tv shows. I thought it was great and it was the first time I had used hulu plus. The only thing I found frustrating was all of the commercials. I have gotten spoiled by HBO and Showtime. It was as good as Top of the Lake and I thought stronger than Engrenages-a French series. The Fall is also a good 5 part series available on netflix.
As you mentioned The Tunnel is a remake of Bron/Broen also The Killing, which is shot in Seattle, is a remake of Forbrydelsen. I have Forbrydelsen in its original language and english subs. It is amazing.
i agree -what a great show. I only started watching because in Jam I took a train over the Oresund Bridge on a trip to stockholm form Copenhagen. I have the same issue-no one is listening to me about watching it!!!
Hello! I'm a book cover designer from New York living in New Mexico. This blog is about home renovation, interior dcor, graphic design, DIY, cosmetics, family, dogs, art, music, books, politics, and just about anything I think is worth sharing. Welcome!
I love Nordic tv programmes and films, I love the quirky vibe and listening to the language. I loved The Bridge, although I'm not normally a fan of crime stuff. I enjoyed Home for Christmas, a series I came across on Netflix, and a film I found called Likkevell (I think that's how you spell it)
Any other recommendations?
I'd be happy to try other foreign language stuff too, French or Spanish, but I really prefer the Nordic stuff (with subtitles obvs!)
Thanks ?
Also the Roy Anderssen triology is good fun - Swedish - also very quirky. Maybe it's something about Sweden?

I watched A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence and was very taken with it so watched the other two. They can all be watched independently - it's not like a serial.
Definitely watch "Trapped" (Icelandic) - especially season 1 where they are trapped in the village, in a blizzard ... with a murderer
Sandhamn Murders (Swedish)
The original Swedish "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy - but very dark and perhaps a trigger warning
State of Happiness (Lykkeland) is a Norwegian TV series that is available on iplayer. I loved it.
Wisting (Norwegian) and Darkness: those who kill (Danish) are also excellent, but are crime series that may not be your cup of tea. Both are on iplayer.
Greyzone, mentioned above, is superb but I don't think it's currently available anywhere. It has Birgitte Hjort Srensen in it, who is brilliant in Borgen (and Game of Thrones, and Pitch Perfect 2).
An epic tragicomedy, Love & Anarchy plumbs the depths of fascist Italy from the perspective of a simple farm boy sent to kill Mussolini. Giancarlo Giannini won the best acting prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his achingly sensitive portrayal of Tunin, a freckle-faced innocent who became an accidental anarchist. His contact in Rome is Salom (Mariangela Melato), a prostitute with her own sob story. While they prepare for the assassination, Tunin falls in love with Tripolina (Lina Polito), which threatens the entire operation. A film of operatic emotion and subversive comedy, Love & Anarchy is a powerful statement on the terror of fascism and the ignoble fates of those who challenged it. [129 min; comedy, drama, romance; Italian with English subtitles]
