Korea/韩國 (ㄏㄢˊㄍㄨㄛˊ, Hánguó)
It is the most common and official term for 「Korea」.
Depending on the dialect, it can be read as Hòhn Gwok (Cantonese), Hân-kok (Minnan/Taiwanese), Hàng-guók (Min Dong), or Hôn-koet (Hakka).
South Korea/南韩 (ㄋㄢˊㄏㄢˊ, Nánhán)
「South Korea」 = South Korea alone
A word widely used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas Chinese communities. In Hong Kong and Macau, the frequency of the title 'South Korea' tends to decrease after being returned to the People's Republic of China.
In August 2008[13], the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea made an official request to Taiwanese press and media to use the term 'Korea'. At the time, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented, "We respect the opinion of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but we have always used the names Korea and Republic of Korea, and it is not a matter of correcting the names." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China does not have the authority to enforce the naming method on Taiwanese press and media.[14] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China gave an answer in consideration of the position of both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea and its own media.[15] However, the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China still uses the terms 'Korea' and 'South Korea' together. In any case, since exchanges with Korea have increased, Taiwanese people also call Korea more often in everyday life. In the public field, such as news and newspaper articles, 'South Korea' is still used a lot,[16] but 'Korea' is also being used more and more.[17]
North Korea/北韩 (ㄅㄟˇㄏㄢˊ, Běihán)
「North Korea」= North Korea alone
A word widely used in capitalist overseas Chinese societies such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. It is clearly different from North Korea's continental name 'Joseon', so you can guess where the Chinese speaker is from with just this one word.

In mainland China, it refers to the North Korean regime + the entire Korean Peninsula. Therefore, 'Korean Peninsula', 'Korean people', 'Korean War' = 'Chosun Peninsula', 'Chosun people'. 'Korean' is at least extant with 'Chosun', and the public universally uses the word 'Korean', but it is called 'Chosun' as a linguistic name and the language used by Korean-Chinese in their own country.
In Taiwan, the name 'Joseon' is used only for words with shallow political meaning and words that have been used for a long time in Greater China. 'Korean language' and 'Korean War' usually use South Korean names, but 'Korean peninsula' and 'Korean people' are also referred to as 'Chosun peninsula' and 'Chosun people'. Another thing to note is that the standard Chinese pronunciation of 'Joseon' is different from the continental standard. On the continent, the character 'goul seon' is read as a third tone (Cháoxiǎn), but in Taiwan it is read as a first tone (Cháoxiān).[19] Rather, the Taiwanese phonetic sound is closer to the original meaning [20], but since the name 'Chosun' itself is not common in Taiwan, many people read it as a continental phonetic because they do not know the standard phonetic sound.
北朝鮮/北朝鲜 (ㄅㄟˇㄔㄠˊ ㄒㄧㄢˇ, Běicháoxiǎn)
“North of Korea” = a word used to refer to North Korea
A word used in mainland China to prepare for 'South Korea'. With the establishment of diplomatic ties between Korea and China in 1992, the People's Republic of China began to refer to 'South Korea' as 'Korea', but since then the distinction between 'North Korea' and 'Joseon' has become meaningless and is not used.
Unusually, FTV, one of Taiwan's major broadcasters, still calls North Korea 'North Korea', and it is the only one among Taiwanese and Chinese-speaking media.[21]
