Youcan easily remove duplicate photos and videos from your library. Duplicates appear automatically in the Duplicates album in the sidebar. (Depending on the size of your library, duplicates may take some time to appear as Photos analyzes your photos.)

One original photo or video appears where the selected duplicates were located in your library. Deleted duplicates appear in the Recently Deleted album, where you can recover or permanently delete them.

Unfortunately, there's currently no way to automatically detect and delete duplicate photos. The only thing you can do is to remove them manually from your account. Either via the Dropbox or Carousel website or via the Dropbox desktop application.

1) Go to www.carousel.com (please log into your account if you haven't already)

2) Navigate to the item that appears to be duplicated

3) Click on the little check mark icon overlying the thumbnail of the duplicate (which you can find on the top right of each thumbnail)

4) Click on the three dots icon on the top right of the screen and choose "Show in folder"

5) Note the location of this file in your Dropbox

6) Repeat steps 3 to 5 for another instance of the item that appears to be duplicated

7) Delete the redundant copies from their location

Dropbox has become ubiquitous digital drawer of the netizens of the planet. The 8-step guide to remove the duplicates is tedious and ineffective. It's not an impossible job to equip Carousel (or Dropbox interface) with a tool to find and eradicate duplicates. Or point users to install third party tools to do this mundane job, if such utilities are indeed available. May it happen. Amen.

Download it for free on the App Store.

With its AI-powered tool, you can find and delete all duplicate and similar photos. Just a few minutes, and your iPhone is a perfectionist's dream. And yeah, it works on your iPad too.

When it comes to a manual approach, one of the first things you can do to remove duplicate photos on iPhone is to tap into Duplicates. How does it work? Photos identifies duplicate photos and videos in your photo library and puts them into the Duplicates album. You can then merge them to keep one version in high quality. And you can use Duplicates to easily remove duplicate photos. Here's how to do that:

HDR is a camera effect for your photos. It stands for High Dynamic Range, which, in simplest terms, means that when you take a picture, the camera is taking multiple images and combining them into one photo. This gives your picture a sharper, higher contrast.

Another option you have is to turn off the setting to Keep Normal Photo altogether. That way, once you take an HDR picture, it only keeps a single copy. But you can only do that on iPhone X and earlier models:

While the Photos app may not have the breadth of editing capabilities, it is still a powerful tool. And when you edit in the Photos app, it saves over the original by default to avoid the creation of duplicates.

You indicate that our are using macOS 13.2, Ventura, which has a built-in duplicate finder. The duplicates are in a folder near the top of the sidebar listed with Library and People, etc. It will show you the two versions and ask if you want to Merge them.

In the pictures above, one photo has a title and the other has no title (so its file name is shown.) I might, after looking at the info window (command-i) decide to just delete the untitled one. If the deleted picture was in an album, then the picture would be missing in that album after the deletion. If I merged them, then the better one (maybe the one that's 1.8 MB) would appear in all the albums either had been in, with the keywords from both pictures, and with the title from the first picture.

Thanks for the reply. I already removed duplicates from the library but I want to remove all the duplicated photos in an album. I was looking for a way to show exact duplicates in an album like it works in the library so I could remove them. Even if I could just see a list view of the photos showing the filenames would allow me to remove the duplicates without having to inspect each photo. Thanks

To see a list of photos in an album you could use the free trial version of PowerPhotos. It lets you view your Photos Library in a nice list view, with the metadata arranged in columns. You can easily sort the photos in the album by clicking on any of the column headers. I am using PowerPhotos a lot, as a companion to Photos. The full, paid version can do a lot more, for example move albums between libraries or help to compare libraries.

Like Rich839, I'm confused about "duplicated photos in an album." The Library view shows every picture in the Photos Library. An album doesn't contain pictures-- an album is actually just a list of pictures you want to see together. That's how a picture can be in several albums. Two albums can both have the same picture name in their lists, and that picture will show up when you click either album. And when you delete a picture from an album, its name remains in the lists of other albums. The name never occurs twice in an album's list.

So, it's hard to see how, if there are no exact duplicates in your entire library, a two identical pictures can appear in a single album. If that's what's happening, can you include a screenshot? Shift-Command-4 will let you select a part of the screen.

Do you mean that you want pictures to appear in only one album-- that you don't want a pictures name to appear on the the lists of two different albums? (One powerful aspect of Photos is that, if you have a picture of a Tiger at the San Diego Zoo, you can have that picture's name listed in both a "Wild Animal" album and in a "Zoo" album. )

Albums contain only thumbnails that refer to the photos in the library. Deleting a photo from the library also deletes it from the album. So, since you removed the duplicates from the library, they shouldn't be appearing in your album.

Since I'm not running Ventura, I can't speak for what features it may have or not have regarding removal of duplicates or listing of duplicates in an album. Richard Taylor's earlier response gave a great explanation of the duplicate removal procedure.

Thank you. I was mistaken in that the album only contains thumbnails, not the actual photo. However, I have multiple thumbnails of the same pictures in my album. The album says I have 1,404 photos in the album and when I delete one of the duplicated thumbnails the number of "photos" in the album reduces by 1. I think the PowerPhotos app is what I'm looking for to get rid of the duplicates.

Apple introduced its "duplicate detection" feature in 2022 and it works just as its name suggests. The tool uses on-device AI to identify identical images and aggregate them in an easy-to-find album in the Photos app. Apple says the iPhone classifies duplicates not only as exact copies, but also as photos that appear to be the same but have unique resolutions, file formats, or other slight differences.

3. Scroll down to the Utilities section and tap Duplicates. This is where you can view all the duplicate photos on your iPhone and delete them, either individually or at once.

6. If you want to delete duplicates individually, scroll up and tap Merge on your chosen selection of duplicate images. Then tap Merge [number] Copies to delete duplicates. Go down the line and repeat this step for all the identical photos you want to delete.

But now that unlimited Google Photos has gone away, I decided it was time to stop being complacent. Even if I keep using the service (at the cost of another cloud storage subscription), I like the idea of having a backup plan.

EaseUS Dupfiles Cleaner is a duplicate file finder and remover that helps to scan and remove duplicate files and photos cluttered on your storage devices. In one click, track down all duplicates, organize photo albums well, free up disk space, and manage storage at better performance.

Still, I winced at the thought of sorting through thousands of old photos one-by-one. What I really needed was a way to eliminate similar-looking photos in bulk and winnow my remaining library down to a much more manageable size. Fortunately, I found exactly what I was looking for with a free duplicate photo cleaner for Windows called AllDup.

While it took some experimenting to find the best settings in both apps, I was ultimately able to clear out hundreds of similar-looking photos using AllDup, which in turn made manual sorting much easier.
