Hi emesene Project,

I'm a big fan of emesene but also of the elementary os project too. I think emesene needs some kind of refresh.
It should follow a new direction and even new design guidelines.
The importance of emesene will become smaller and smaller.
On Windows nearly all users use Windows live Messenger, Skype and there will be so many other im clients in the Windows 8 appstore, so there is no need for emesene.
On Mac there is no need for emesene too because there is already Adium, Facetime, Messages and a lot other alternatives in the Mac App Store where emesene isn't event present.
On the linux platform we also have a lot of im clients like Skype, Empathy, Amsn, ... but none of them is really really good at what it does.

Emesene should only use GTK as a toolkit, concentrate on the Linux platform and follow a completely new direction.

So why am i choosing the elementary ?

- They have good design guidelines.
- They have a strong one strong goal, the application should do one thing but very well.
- They have very talented gui designers.
- The new emesene could be an official im client shipped at least in one distribution, so your efforts weren't for nothing.
- They want to integrate all their applications as tight as possible thanks to Graham, overall GUI consistency and simplicity.

Well emesene is already simple to use, but emesene or the emesene developers could contribute to a project which would be shipped
in the elementary distribution as a default im client.

At first emesene would start as a community project and later even as an official elementary project if it respects all the elementary guidelines.

Why i'm telling this ? Actually many GNOME distributions don't ship emesene. Elementary is looking for volunteers to create a new im Client.
They already started a provisional im client project called Graham.

Features of this im client would be :

- Single window for the contacts and conversation
- Conversation Themes
- Super simple Interface
- No Menu-bar
- Using telepathy tubes
- ...

There are some of elementary mockups floating around like this one.

I think actually there aren't a lot of elementary developers with an "im client developing experience" so please help elementary by contributing to Graham.
Another possibility is to modify emesene but for doing that it has to follow the elementary standards like no menu-bar, the gui should be very simple to use and it should be written as much as possible in Vala.

If you want to contribute than use their irc channel for questions or join their official mailinglist.

Please help the elementary project on creating a really good, pleasant and amazing to use im client which would be a serious competitor for Empathy.

Check out their project and please think about it.

Dear Steven,
I personally don't think there is any need for emesene to tie to specific projects or rules.
However due to the very essence of emesene you are free to contribute and try to bend emesene for your purposes.
I'm sorry but I'm from my phone so I cannot answer point to point.

I read an article about the Windows live messengers users. Early in 2013 it will become impossible to connect a WLM network.
The reason for it is Skype, they want to switch their users to Skype.
So in my opinion Emesene and other similar messengers like amsn, ... should consider it and put the their development forces to somewhere else.
Furthermore IM messengers they aren't that much used anymore, reason for this are the social networks.
Instead of having a lot of messengers/social clients of Linux there should be half much but really good ones.

Elementary's socialite is a social client and it will be an alternative to gwibber :

I know you won't tie emesene with a specific project that's your choice but in my opinion im messengers are going to become extinct in the future.
In my opinion Ubuntu is a great distribution but they don't collaborate with others and their upstream is very weak.
Elementary however they've a small developer team so they try to collaborate with GNOME and other projects even more.
The newest collaboration is with Lubuntu guys for a brand new software center based on packagekit.
So they're firstly very flexible if you guys won't tie to their rules, perhaps a collaboration could be done ?
Secondly they focus a lot on the design and another important point is they give the developers enough time to finish their project.
Focus on quality is also an essential point, so the app only see it's release when it's ready.

BTW check out the new elementaryOS beta.
