On February 4, 2012, Emerson Middle School’s MathCounts! Team won
first place in the green division of the MathCounts! competition. The
team consisted of Estafania Diaz, Erika Mendez, Cobalt McAvinue and
David Shaw, and was coached by Mose Wintner, a UCLA PhD student in
math. This is the first year Emerson has competed in MathCounts!

The MathCounts! Competition is a national middle school coaching and
competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement
through a series of fun and engaging "bee" style contests. In Los
Angeles, Emerson is one of two public schools in Los Angeles to have a
MathCounts! program and competes with other local schools, including
Mirman, Windward, and Millikan.

In the fall of 2011, David Shaw, a former Westwood Charter student and
current Emerson 7th grader, put together a proposal for a MathCounts!
program at Emerson and presented it to the parents and teachers at
Emerson’s PTSA. Through a grant from Emerson’s Foundation and a
generous parent donation, Emerson raised the money to sponsor the
program and hire Mr. Wintner to coach the competitive team. Twenty to
thirty students participate in the program each semester.
Competitions are voluntary.

Mose Wintner is a UCLA PhD student in math. He previously tutored
high school students to compete in a similar program when he was a
student at UCSB.
