Michael Nelson, Bloomberg Government; former board member, Senior Fellow, C-PET

 

Michael Nelson is an Analyst on Technology Policy for Bloomberg Government.  He was previously with Leading Edge Forum, and prior to that Visiting Professor of Internet Studies in Georgetown University's Communication, Culture, and Technology (CCT) Program, a unique, trans-disciplinary masters program for students and researchers interested in how information technology is shaping society and vice versa.  Whilst at Georgetown, he conducted research and taught on the Future of the Internet, innovation, technology forecasting, and e-government, as well as consulting and speaking on Internet technology and policy.

 

Before joining the Georgetown faculty, Michael spent almost ten years as Director of Internet Technology and Strategy at IBM, where he managed a team helping define and implement IBM's Next Generation Internet strategy.  Prior to that, Michael was Director for Technology Policy at the FCC, where he helped craft policies to spur the growth of the Internet.  Before joining the FCC in January 1997, Michael was Special Assistant for Information Technology at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy where he worked with Vice President Al Gore on telecommunications policy, encryption and online privacy, electronic commerce, and information policy.

 

Michael has a PhD from MIT, a BS from Caltech, and was recently named a Fellow by theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science for his contributions to science and technology in the field of information, computing and communication.

George Atkinson The professional career of Dr. Atkinson spans several diverse arenas.  His academic experience includes classroom and graduate teaching, scientific research, and administration; while in the private sector he launched a high-technology sensor development company serving the semiconductor industry.

 

In the U.S. government, Dr. Atkinson served in several capacities including as the Science and Technology Adviser to U.S. Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice.  In January 2008, Dr. Atkinson launched the new Institute on Science for Global Policy (ISGP).

Over 20 years of experience: founding member and VP of an e-Government technology startup that has grown into an international industry leader. Currently working to accelerate growth for Southern California startups, primarily in the tech space, with services that range from advisor to acting CMO. Public agency expertise includes eGov consulting, public affairs and political campaign strategy (press advance for a presidential campaign, appointment as Intergovernmental Affairs Officer for a US Governor and work at the White House Office of Public Liaison). Media efforts began in print journalism and include positions with two CNN bureaus (Washington DC and Los Angeles) and KCBS News Desk. 

Gabriela's leadership includes selection as a judge on Mayor Sanders' "San Diego Apps Challenge" and service on the Board of Directors for San Diego Habitat for Humanity (elected President and Vice President during the 1999-2004 term). She has delivered multiple presentations over the past decade at international conferences and is a published e-Gov and tech startup expert in national media and international management journals.

Jody Westby, CEO, Global Cyber Risk

 

Drawing upon a unique combination of more than twenty years of technical, legal, policy, and business experience, Jody Westby brings a seasoned, multidisciplinary perspective to the many issues facing businesses and governments today in the areas of privacy, information security, outsourcing/offshoring risks, cybercrime, and IT risk management. As CEO of Global Cyber Risk, she consults with governments, private sector executives, and operational personnel on the development of enterprise securityprograms that dovetail the technical, legal, operational, and managerial considerations.

 

Prior to forming Global Cyber Risk, Ms. Westby served as senior managing director for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), specializing in outsourcing and cyber security/privacy issues. Before that, she was president of The Work-IT Group, launched In-Q-Tel, an IT solutions company for the CIA, managed the domestic policy department for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the world's largest business organization. Ms. Westby has advised government officials and industry in Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Armenia, Serbia, Russia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Trinidad, Dominica, St. Lucia, Grenada, South Africa, and India.

 

Ms. Westby serves as Adjunct Distinguished Fellow to Carnegie Mellon CyLab. She is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia, Colorado and Pennsylvania and the American Bar Association. She is chair of the ABA's Privacy and Computer Crime Committee and was chair, co-author and editor of its International Guide to Combating Cybercrime, International Guide to Cyber Security, International Guide to Privacy, and Roadmap to an Enterprise Security Program (endorsed by the Global CSO Council). Ms. Westby is a member of the World Federation of Scientists' Permanent Monitoring Panel on Information Security and represents the American Bar Association on the Board of the National Conference of Lawyers and Scientists. She also serves on the advisory board of TheIntellectual Property Counselor and Eruces, Inc. Ms. Westby is the author of numerous articles on information security and speaks globally on privacy, security, cybercrime, outsourcing, Homeland Security, and legal issues pertaining to the use of technology.
