The dramatic suggestion that testing for drug safety could soon be done using a chip rather than animals and humans is revolutionary. It could make the process of developing new drugs much faster and cheaper. In the process, is raises basic regulatory questions, and illustrates the problem that regulators face when technological change is fast-paced.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR DEVELOPMENT

Co-sponsored by RTI International

UNESCO recently convened a High Panel on Science and Technology for Development. How can the best brains and the smartest ideas in emerging technologies be focused on the urgent needs of the developing world? Are there quick victories we can win? How do we scale their R and D capacities? Can we develop win-win strategies for western researchers and corporations?

Panelists will include:

Charles Rodes leads the Biomass Cookstove Grand Challenge Initiative at RTI International which applies integrated solutions to reduce mortality and morbidity from smoke exposures; and works with the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and the NIH Indoor Air Pollution initiative.
