Dear Dan,
We are pleased to share with you the new Lancet Series on Women’s and Children’s Health in Conflict Settings, free to read with registration on TheLancet.com.
Over 630 million women and children, approximately 8% of the world's population, were affected by conflict in 2017. The Series aims to address the special requirements of sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition services in conflict settings. The papers provide empirical and analytic insights into the nature and dynamics of women's and children's health in diverse contexts, proposing immediate next steps to fill the gaps in addition to long term action to support more effective humanitarian health responses.
The changing nature of war complicates the negotiation of access to and protection of women's and children's health and nutritional services. More intense and more chronic conflicts are shown to lead to greater mortality. These indirect effects of conflict on women and children far exceed the direct effects and calls for clearer information on the indirect health effects of armed conflicts. Led by academic co-investigators and partners affiliated with the BRANCH (Bridging Research & Action in Conflict Settings for the Health of Women & Children) Consortium, the Series synthesises existing evidence with new modelling and insights from a range of local research partners, humanitarian agencies, and civil society organisations.
We hope you find the Series to be informative and useful, and invite you to explore additional, related resources below and on the Series page on TheLancet.com.
Yours sincerely,
The Lancet
