Tackling The Humanitarian Impacts of the Climate Crisis
Humanitarians see the effect of disasters in places lacking early warning systems, in poverty, affected by climate change and conflict, and among people displaced or marginalized. The number of people affected by climatological disasters is rising, and will continue to rise without action on both climate change adaptation and mitigation. How to Boost Resilience to Climate Change
As temperatures rise and climate change impacts intensify, nations must urgently step up action to adapt to the new climate reality or face serious costs, damages and losses, a UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report on adaptation finds. Increasing the ability of countries and communities to absorb impacts — through capacity building, empowerment, good governance and early warning systems — can markedly reduce vulnerability to climate hazards. Accelerating Research on Resilience for Rural Families Worldwide
Climate-related disasters such as heavy rains and locust swarms in Eastern Africa and drought across much of the arid Sahel were outweighed by the global catastrophe of the COVID-19 pandemic. The accumulation of regional and global catastrophes in a single year shows how fragile progress against poverty and hunger can be.
