[Martin] traced out the connectors on the RF receiver for the BoxeeBox, and found the usual V+, V-, Power, and Ground connections found in a USB cable. The receiver operated at 3.3 Volts, so stepping down the voltage required regulator. The rest of the project was simply putting everything in a project box and stuffing it behind his PC.

Windows identifies the RF receiver as a normal keyboard, so everything went swimmingly. Since [Martin] built this small device, a few people have come up with better keyboard layouts for XBMC and the Boxee remote, allowing this device to function far into the future.

Right? It was an utter POS gravitated to by folks amused by shiny. Never had a problem with my xbmc so never really saw what the fuss was about. As others have noted, I got one of those 20 buck media center remotes from ebay and never looked back. Even has a keyboard and trackpad so dunno what this is all about.

1. I want to know if is possible to add more contour to subtitles on my movies. i mean all my movies from HDD. Is too thin and i have trouble to read especially when the subtitle it is on white. Maybe I can connect thru FTP to my box and edit a script or a line.

Are you saying you have hooked yours up to 5v through pin2, and got it working? I also found the the chip has a built in regulator alowing it to accept 5v through the VBUS, but I was not able to determin which pin VBUS would be. When I measured the Boxee, it gave 3.3v to pins 2 and 10.

YES. Success! :)
This site was among the first ones i visited a few weeks ago when i started figuring out how to achieve this due to insane battery consumption of my current remote control and of course due to greatness of boxee :)

Thanks very much Martin and everyone else on this page! I used the 3.3v GPIO header to power the red wire, and connected the green, white and black ground wire to a usb cable I ripped apart. My Boxee Box Remote works straight out the box with OSMC on my Raspberry Pi 2.

Besides this little hack we will of course also need a Boxee Box suitable version of XBMC. The most recent version can be found in the Boxeed Forum or from Devil-Strike and I highly recommend downloading the latest version there as well.

Your support is very much appreciated, and can be as easy as sharing a link to my website with others, or on social media.

Support can also be done by sponsoring me, and even that can be free (e.g. shop at Amazon).
Any funds received from your support will be used for web-hosting expenses, project hardware and software, coffee, etc.

Thank you very much for those that have shown support already!
It's truly amazing to see that folks like my articles and small applications.

Please note that clicking affiliate links, like the ones from Amazon, may result in a small commission for us - which we highly appreciate as well.

Devil strikes website is down and also the link to download -strike.com/xbmc_boxeebox/xbmc13.alpha12.boxeebox2014.01.18.early_alpha2_92146e8.zip is also down. Can someone upload it to a different server?

I followed the above instructions; however, after copying the files from the xbmc folder to the USB stick, I copied the Kodi files from my C: drive and pasted them into the USB drive and overwrote anything that was a duplicate. I then renamed the xbmc.bin file to Kodi.bin. I then plugged the USB stick into my boxee and voila, worked.

Maybe someone installed an update, possibly crippling the Boxee Hack, but I very much doubt that since I think Boxee Development has stopped anyway. But one never knows, the latest version of the Boxee+Hack can be found at

Hi, perhaps you can help me? I have been trying to do a factory reset on my boxee and nothing happenes. It starts and stays a 0% then I get an error. I have tried to download firmware and still nothing works.

I have a USB stick with Kodi working great and I replicated the folder structure for Kodi but it is not working. Wondering if you could just confirm if it worked for you earlier and if you have any pointers for me.

unfortunately, I do not have a Boxee anymore, and I have the impression that KODI for Boxee is no longer maintained either.
Maybe one of the other visitors can assist in this?
Sorry that I cannot be more helpful

Hi Very informative guide. The unpack of XBMC, should that go to the usb stick labeled BOXEE or can it go to a second usb harddisk (which I have and is called ELEMENTS)? And second how is xbmc compared to boxee? Does it have web browser? Is anyone else having problems with boxee web browser and web sites with https. It is like going against a wall. Anyway a wonderful guide, thank you a lot!
