Dear all

Let me bring to your attention of the precious medicine (Meropenem inj.).  For sometimes now, it has been a practice that most of Doctors prefer Meropenem inj.  For the sake of our patients its very nice. However,  treating patients using this medicine put our hospital and the nation to have no alternative medicine in case will become resistant. We came from very good Ceftriaxone inj in early 2000s, today ceftriaxone in obsolete and no one wants it, although still work to some patients include many other antibiotics we have in stock (find attachment).

Recommendation

I would like to advise everyone that meropenem should not be used as a first line treatment to our patients. We need to establish whether or not every patient has tried other antibiotics before prescribing Meropenem.

Also the laboratory department has to have sensitivity tests to each antibiotic being used. While other medicines are still  in used and active against most of bacteria, today they are not palatable to most clinicians. We need to reserve our precious medicine so that can remain active against bacteria for long time.

Sensitivity test need to have in place for other antibiotics before prescribing meropemen, otherwise we are facing an endless pit.  Find attached used of meropenem and Ceftriaxone injections. We still use other antibiotics like ceftriaxone, but the increasing trend need to be checked for the future outcome of our patients.
