Hi all,

You are kindly invited for the talk by Dr. Tan Yeow Kee from A*STAR Singapore on "HuGGler & SoundEye: Radical way of providing comfort and care to elderly?" on Friday 18th October 2013 at 3:00 pm. (see an invitation flyer attached).
Please RSVP to Dr Qing Zhang, qing....@csiro.au.

Abstract

In this presentation, two work will be presented: HuGGler Pet Robot and SoundEye Emergency Monitoring System.

HuGGler, an interactive pet companion with the unique patent pending technology to recognize verbal (e.g. laughing, crying, shouting and talking) and non-verbal (e.g. squeezing, hitting, patting and stroking) acts that are tied to the emotional state of a person. HuGGler, a cuddly and affectionate interactive robotic pet companion, can provide un-conditional companionship to the elderly. This will positively impact their emotional wellbeing and their quality-of-life, ultimately leading to improved overall health and reduced health care cost. HuGGler will also provide geriatricians with reports related to the interaction behavior of the elderly performed towards the robotic platform.

Sound-Eye is a revolutionary emergency monitoring system that employs sound event classification technology to detect abnormal sound events. Sound-Eye is carefully designed to address the need of stakeholders in terms of affordability, ease-of-installation and privacy protection. Should an emergency occur, Sound-Eye can detect the natural reaction of elderly verbally screaming for assistance instantly, thereby mediating the severity of the condition.

Dr. Tan Yeow Kee (PI) is a senior research fellow in Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R). He is currently the group leader of the robotics sense in the Robotics Programme in Institute for Infocomm Research and the secretary of the IEEE Man, Systems and Cybernetics Chapter (Singapore). Over the past 4 years, have mentored more than 30 students from universities, polytechnics and tertiary schools in various projects related to speech-enabled system and robotics. He also managed research and industry projects, up to $4mil dollars worth in total. Currently he is overseeing the research and development of the pet robot with emotion recognition capability. Dr. Tan is interested in the developing technologies for aging population and children with special needs. The work developed by his team was well received and covered by various news reports such as Reuters, Asia CNET and Singapore local news. In conjunction of robotics, he is also working on devices with intelligent sensors. Latest idea conceptualize was Sound-Eye, which recently won first prize in Hacknovate Healthcare Technology Competition.
