1. Launch of  http://www.embsqld.org/

We’d like to welcome you all to the website of the newly formed IEEE Queensland (QLD) Engineering Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) chapter website  http://www.embsqld.org/  The Chapter was formed in July 2008 and officially became active on the 31st October 2008, with an inaugural event to mark it (see details on the link to ‘Events’ on the website).

The Queensland EMB Society Chapter founding officers and also 2009 committee members comprise of biomedical engineers/researchers from the major universities of Queensland, the national research body of Australia and a medical device industry. In alignment with the IEEE EMBS, QLD EMBS chapter’s mission is to enhance all aspects of healthcare through the application of biomedical engineering and related technologies to biomedicine, the sharing of knowledge between engineers, healthcare professionals and healthcare industries; and promotion of our discipline to students and the broader community.  We intend to achieve this by fostering opportunities and engagements for inter-disciplinary activities through meeting events of scientific presentations and demonstrations delivered by experts from various areas of biomedical engineering/research applications.  The aim of these events are also to create opportunities for the audience of professionals from the universities, hospital and healthcare institutions, research organisations, and medical device industries to network and share their experiences and also, collaborate. Students from biomedical engineering disciplines from the various universities of QLD will also be invited to these events to learn from and network with the biomedical engineering professionals. We also intend to create events that aim to provide career development for both professionals and students in biomedical engineering.

The aim of the QLD EMBS chapter website is to regularly update you of the upcoming events and also include as much of the material/information as possible from previous events. This website is also a window to information on the IEEE EMBS and the benefits of becoming a member of the IEEE EMBS. If there are any other suggestions of how we can improve the content of this website, please feel free to email us.

best wishes,
Mohan (Chapter Chair)

2. Science Symposium GPGPU Techniques for Medical Image Processing  and Simulation 30th March 2009.

CSIRO and the IEEE Queensland Engineering in Medicine and
Biology Society (EMBS) are proud to announce a Science
Symposium on GPGPU Techniques for Medical Image Processing
and Simulation, on the 30th March 2009.

When 30th March 2009 9:00am – 4:00pm
Where Level 2 UQCCR Building 71/918
Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital
Herston QLD Australia
Cost Free (lunch and refreshments provided)
Registration By 15th March 2009
Lauren....@csiro.au (07) 3253 3600

Due to huge increases in the processing power of modern graphics
cards, General Purpose computation on Graphics Processing Units
(GPGPU) techniques have become widely used to solve
computationally expensive problems often over massive data sets.

The upcoming Science Symposium offers researchers an
opportunity to see the potential for how GPGPU techniques can be
leveraged in their own imaging and simulation research via technical
briefs and real-world examples.

At the end of the Symposium, delegates should have a solid
understanding of GPGPU techniques, including preferred hardware
and software platforms.

We are offering the opportunity for delegates to present oral papers
on GPGPU based techniques covering (but not limited to) the
following topics:

 Image processing and registration
FEM and soft tissue simulation techniques
 Large data set visualisation
 Image guided surgery
 Preoperative surgical planning
 Tomographic reconstruction
 Ultrasound simulation

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Mark Harris, Senior Developer Technology
Engineer at NVIDIA, will speak about the latest NVIDIA hardware
architecture and the CUDA programming platform.

We look forward to seeing you and as seats are limited so we advise
early registration to avoid disappointment.

This year Griffith University  launched its new degree Sports and Bio Engineering. It offers an Electronic Engineering degree accreditation together with a healthy dose of Sports and Biomedical Engineering as well. The first cohort of students look a healthy bunch. The program comes on the back of Griffith's research efforts in Sports and Biomedical Engineering in recent years. More at http://sportsbioengineering.com
