Does Embird Basic allow you to design an embroidery from scratch: without also purchasing the Digitizer program? I'm not sure what Basic does. Any help would be appreciated. I did download the free trial, but I was new to embroidery and it expired before I understood any of it. Now it's too late so I have to buy it, but am loath to spend all that money on a product if I won't be able to design my own embroideries.
thanks for your input.

You will need the Studio plugin to create your own designs from scratch.

Hi Julie.  Embird basic will resize, recolor, merge designs, allow you to do some basic editing of a design, allow you to add lettering to a design, allow you to see your designs in Windows Explorer without opening Embird with the Iconizer add-on, split designs and more.  If you want to digitize from scratch, you need Studio.  If you want to create your own fonts, you need Font Engine.  There are also separate modules for a type of photostitch and for cross stitch.  Basic Embird will not allow you to digitize.  HTH  Linda I

Embird is a module system. Basic Embird is the managing and editing part. You use Manager to view your designs. You can use its tools to change the colors you see on screen and to help manage your design stash. You use Editor to make changes to existing designs – those you’ve purchased or downloaded for free. It does not have the capabilities to let you create your own designs.

Studio is the part of the program you’ll want to add next if you want to create your own designs from scratch.

Sfumato is also part of the digitizing tools and is used to create what is more commonly known as picture stitch designs. It using closely spaced lines of stitches to recreate a photo, better viewed at a bit of distance.

The other modules include keyboard lettering options. You type in the text you want and the program turns it into embroidery. The Alphabets are sold individually. These are pre-digitized, resizable. Font Engine uses TrueType fonts on your computer (installed and not installed) to create embroidery letters. These are auto-digitized, done on the spot and as auto-digitizing goes, some come out great and others not quite so – depends on the font artwork.

If interested in doing designs with cross-stitch, then the Cross-Stitch module is what you want to add.

And don’t forget Iconizer. It is a little program that works in the background wherever you have an Explorer type window. Instead of seeing generic icons that say DST or PES, you see little pictures of the actual design. Makes finding the right design a lot easier! A number of posts on any Embird lists result from this little plug-in suddenly not functioning – usually easily fixed. But we get to become very dependent on it being there.

Hope that helps …

No, sorry, you need the digitizer part of the program.  But Basic does an amazing amount of things. Lots of editing features.

Try the free software Thredworks digitizing program.  Then use the lessons by other people in threworks to learn how to use.  Thredworks manual is confusing.
