Hi Amanda,
Embird does not come with any fonts or lettering. Yes, you do have to purchase them separately, but that is one of the pros of Embird. You only buy what you need when you need it instead of having to buy a whole package that includes a lot of stuff you will never use.
You have 3 options when it comes to adding lettering to your designs with Embird. One, you can purchase the Alphabets that are available through Embird. These are keyboard alphabets, resizable within limits, and they stitch out very well. Two, Font Engine. This uses the TrueType fonts from your computer (installed and uninstalled), to auto-digitize the text you type in (keyboard lettering), again resizable within limits. Not all fonts work well with Font Engine, but many do. Third, you can use third party “fonts”, which are actually alphabet letters that you purchase from your favorite designers. Each letter is a separate stitch file and you merge them into Editor to create lettering. This kind of “font” has the same limits on resizing that any embroidery design does.

My opinion – and others will disagree and that’s perfectly OK – is that the Embird Alphabets stitch out much better than the Font Engine ones do. TTF (Font Engine) results can be varied, just as all auto-digitizing results are. They can be good or they can be bad. It depends on the font that is used and how it was created. Some fonts are created with lots and lots of layers and Font Engine will struggle with those. But you are given a lot of control over the results with both the Alphabets and Font Engine – you have control over the cover stitch, density, pull compensation, size, stitch direction, just to name a few. And you need to learn how to use these tools.
I will also go out on a limb and say that keyboard lettering, both Embird Alphabets and Font Engine - are not intended to take the place of manually digitized lettering. They are intended to give us a quick and easy way to add names and other text to designs we’ve purchased. Studio does allow you more control over keyboard lettering than Editor does, but it still is not the perfect solution. If using Studio to create designs and logos, you really should learn to digitize the lettering too if you want it to stitch out the very best it can.
