Hello! I purchased Embird basic and Studio several months ago, and love it! I am so much happier with my designs than I was with the 4D I have used and been frustrated with for the last few years. Live and learn, but a costly mistake!

I have a Husqvarna Viking Designer 2, that uses a d-card, via a d-card reader/writer to put the design into the machine. I have not been able to figure out how to do this from Embird, and am afraid I probably cannot.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, as my "dear" 4D wants to change my designs, and not for the better, when I open them to transfer to the card.

Hi Debbie,

Lettering does not come with the basic Embird module. As with everything else in the Embird program, it is a separate purchase. That is what keeps the cost of the basic program down. You buy only what YOU want to use.

I recommend starting with an Embird Alphabet or two. They are relatively inexpensive and very versatile when it comes to sizing. They always stitch well as long as you don’t try doing them too small. NOTHING in embroidery works well if you try to make it too small. For your quilt labels, I would check out Alphabets 22 and 24 for very small lettering. They are redwork alphabets (line stitching, not satin stitching).

If you haven’t done so, you’ll need to download them from the Embird website, and then install them. You can download single alphabets by clicking on the BLACK text on the download page. Or all the alphabets in a single download.

When you go to use the Alphabets, even after purchasing one and getting the registration number put in, you may be presented with the Do you want to Register this alphabet window. This is because the first alphabet installed on your computer isn’t registered to you – and all you need to do to proceed is click CANCEL. It will move on to the Insert Text window. Then you can choose the alphabet you do have registered and get to work. From then on, you shouldn’t get that window.

You can play with the characters ABCabc in any unregistered alphabet and Font Engine to try them out. Again, just click CANCEL when presented with the Do you want to Register window.

Hi Debbie,

The font engine allows you to add letters using your keyboard. It is an add on. I do not own that part, because I buy alphabets and use those.  When you purchase an alphabet each letter is seen as one design that you join together to make the name or word you want to use. You can get them most any place you would buy designs on line, and in many different fonts.

Hope that makes sense.

Tiffany

Hi,

I am new to this group. I just purchased Embird basic for 2012 and using on a windows 7 64 bit computer. I thought that I would be able to add lettering to designs without having to purchase any other software. Am I correct and just can't figure it out? It keeps wanting me to purchase modules Font Engine or Alphabet. I want to add lettering for a quilt label. I am using a Deco 340 and the fonts that came with the machine are too large for quilt labels. Please help me.

Thanks,
Debbie

you could use the Ultimate Box card reader/writer, it ships with a card that will fit your Designer2, and Embird already has a header for the Ultimate Box... (look at the row across the top)

That is one of the few machines that you cannot write to from Embird. It
requires that special card and reader, and the Viking software. Viking
software does like to take over the machine formats whenever you open it.
You can set Embird to check your Iconizer settings every time you open
Embird, and it should set them back. Check that box in the lower left corner
of Iconizer Settings. Yes, it is a pain, but one I am afraid you will have
to live with if you want to continue using that machine.

You write:

They always stitch well as long as you don’t try doing them too small. NOTHING in embroidery works well if you try to make it too small

Can I change the density and/or buy smaller fonts via another vendor?

I embroider names on lab coats and the capital letters are about 10mm high, about ½ to 5/8 inch.

The HV Designer II has a d-card reader/writer that writes the designs from your computer via a program called VIP Customizing. It includes a tool to change from .VIP or .HUS to several other design types and visa versa. Using Embird for this type of transformation is a bit easier. VIP Customizing only runs on WindowsXP, and HV has never had any plans to upgrade. You get to pay gobs more money to buy a new embroidery machine AND the programs to go with it if you want to go pro.

Embird has more advanced tools to change the your designs, but no other programs are required to operate the HV Designer II Embroidery system. The Ultimate Box Card reader is not required unless you want to buy pre-made/programed cards used in other sewing systems. I have found the premade cards to be overly expensive. I have not had any problems with the Iconizer, Sufamato, etc. Just save the designs to your hard drive or a external storage system and pick up the designs you want to use with the d-card reader writer, slip the card into the machine and off you go.

10mm should work find for most of the Alphabets. Look at the ones that have even width columns. They will work best. It is when you start demanding they do ¼” – 3/8” that it can become very iffy.

Yes, you can change both density and underlay with both the Alphabets and Font Engine.  You can buy 3rd party “fonts” and use them in Embird, but right now, you’ll need to merge them in and arrange them manually. Changing density is possible with them, but not underlay. And probably not with results that are as good as you would get using one of the Embird options.
