I purchased a machine embroidery file from the Brother website
iEmbroidery.com (.pen) thinking I could convert the file to the format
I use (.jef). Unfortunately, this Brother file format is not included
in the list of file formats that can be converted by Embird. Does
anyone know how I can get this file converted to ANY format Embird
recognizes? From there, I can convert the file. Thanks in advance
for any help.

Hi, never heard of a .pen format! Brother usually is .pes and then there is .pec and the machines save to .phb or .phc, but Embird can convert all of these. Are you sure it is an embroidery file?

I have honestly never heard of pen format. Can you go back to the site and
ask them for pes or jif format?

Those files cannot be converted. Plus they cannot even be stitched
out on any machine except a Brother Disney machine. The model of the
machines that can stitch them have a 'D' in them.

Example:

I have a Brother ULT 2001 and it can't stitch them but my new Brother
Quattro 2 6700 D can stitch them.

I thought you had to specify the model of your machine in order to
purchase the Disney designs so I am not sure why it let you buy them
for a machine model that runs jef format files. The website really
should have notified you before you purchased so you did not waste
your money.

PEN? Is it at all possible that you hit the n key and replaced the last letter, which should be S, with an N? Try making a copy of the file, renaming it with a PES extension, and seeing if your software will read it. I checked all 3 of my programs that do conversions, and none has any PEN extension.

Just my 2 cents.

Bob

At brothers homepage, it said both .pen and  .pes files.

Guess it is a very special format.

Non of my programs are able to convert it as well….

Wanda,

My apologies, but I misspelled the website! It’s www.ibroidery.com. I was
able to locate some additional information on their Download Policy page,
which is:

"Digital embroidery design(s) is in the .pen proprietary format. The .pen
format can NOT be changed."

So I guess I'm stuck with this "new" format.

Marcelle,

Thank you for your explanation. Now I know what happened and why I cannot
convert the file.

Since I cannot use the file, I am attaching it to this message in return for
your help (and knowing that you can use the file). I'm glad that someone
will be able to use the file after all.

In appreciation,
Janice

It is the Brother Disney machines.  Proprietary only. No changes.

Hi Wanda,

The only machines that can stitch the files are Brother 'Disney'
machines. They will have a 'D' in the model number of the machine.
If the model doesn't include a D it can't stitch them.

When you order on ibroidery it asks for your machine model number
because some machines even with a D in the model number won't stitch
all of the designs based on the hoop size limitations.

A few years back before I knew about all this I called the dealer
where I purchased my older Brother ULT 2001 and asked if the 'Cars 2'
designs would sew on my machine. I was told they would so I ordered
it. When it arrived I put it in my machines card reader and it
promptly destroyed my card reader. Then I found out that my ULT could
not stitch them and the dealer mistakenly told me it would. I had to
have my card reader replaced.

The local dealer told me that putting the Disney card in my machine is
what destroyed it. So if anyone is uncertain about what Disney
designs their machine will stitch be careful about using a design
card. Apparently they are designed this way.

Disney does not allow Brother to share any format information with any
other company so that is why none of the other machines or software
recognizes the format. Disney gets $$ for every Brother machine model
containing a 'D' and they don't allow their designs to be stitched on
any other machine that they don't get $$ from.

I hope this helps everyone with the Disney design questions. I found
all this out the very hard expensive way.

At least I know why no one has been able to convert the file, and that the
file format does exist. I've learned a lot about this file format!

There is a second e-mail that says the correct web page

yes .pen is there also it says it can be converted with only Brother PE Design.

Gotta buy that software but go to a brother group to discuss this!

Wanda,

As I understand it now, this format (*.pen) only runs on certain Brother Disney-designated machines and cannot be converted to other formats.  This must be why no one has been able to identify the format for conversion, so I may be stuck with a file I cannot use.  I don't remember what I paid for it, and I've certainly learned a great deal about it since then.

An example of a Brother machine that can read this file format is a Brother Quattro 2 6700 D.

I also have .pen files that I got off of iEmbroidery and when you purchase those you can only use the machine that you register with those designs. I have two different Brother machines and can only embroider designs on the one machine.

Be sure you read the format carefully.  Many formats can be converted to your machines format (with exception of ".art" bernina propriety) files.  I have never come across an "dot PEN" file yet either.  I downloaded from the brother website before & always choose the (dot pes) file for easy of using.  Can you go back to the site where you purchased and choose a different format?
