New Embird purchase

My friend had let me borrow her machine/computer etc and she has Embird and all the plug ins and options and anything else Embird you can imagine.  I have since lost contact with her or I would be asking her these questions.  

I have recently acquired a Bernina Deco 330.  I want to get Embird but my head is spinning looking at all the options.  I don't understand the Font Engine vs Alphabets - what exactly does it mean by True Type fonts?  Do I need to have alphabets as well as the engine?  My embroidery is very basic, I use it for home use only, usually quilts and shirts for the kids, the occasional name/team on a sports bag.  What do people suggest I get?  I know I need the basic program obviously but as far as plug ins what would be most useful for me?
