Hi all,

Andrea & I are trying to brainstorm about our research project. We
were wondering if other people had ideas or thoughts about the project
or know what others have done in the past to give us some ideas to
jump off of.

Thanks!
Katy & Andrea

I have had a couple of projects in the past. For the curriculum
strand my project was student developed units
then last year in organzation I created a WIKI for my classroom as a
communication tool. This year, alas, I am
having some trouble wrapping my brain around the incorporation of
technology.

If you identify where you want to add to your teaching, perhaps we
could brainstorm some tools that might help. I'd be happy to help
generate ideas with you.

I agree with everyone.

I am having a difficult time coming up with an idea with
Language Arts. However last night when I was brainstorming, I was
thinking about data driven instruction and how this changes learning.
The reason for this is because we have gone away with one reading
program in my school and have added several assessments instead. For
most of my teachers in the building, this has become very successful
for them. Since this is my first year teaching I really want to focus
on data driven instruction specifically in regards to Language Arts. I
am interested to see how this goes.

Since I am teaching 3 out of 4 math classes I decided to do something
around math. I need to do an exploratory for 7th and 8th graders and
had no idea what to do. This class gave me an idea. I have also
decided to do something similiar to our strand project. It is
important to pick your content area first. I am not familiar with
other projects that have been done in the past for this class.

I'm interested in teaching math once I am done with my schooling, so I
had trouble thinking of how to create a project that relates to both
the content that I'll be focusing on in the classroom as well as ideas
we've explored in our strand. I want to look more closely at the
correlation between literacy and performance in the math classroom.
If anyone has any ideas or experiences that they'd like to share, it
would really help me out since I'm still a student myself & don't have
a classroom yet! Thanks! Callie crei...@uvm.edu

I think your idea of math and literacy correlation is interesting. A
research proposal that illustrated research-based connections, and
perhaps some creative ideas that math teachers could use to strengthen
language/math skills would be cool. It would be amazing to see some
creative ideas that help emerging mathematicians use poetry, or memoir
writing to support their understanding of operations. I hope this may
help you and your work, but it's late and I'm most likely not making
much sense. Cheers . . . Pete

Yeshua,

Perhaps extending your data-driven literacy supports to involve a
partnership with your students might be a way to frame it. You could
team with each of them to establish portfolios, assist in data
collection, seek out leveled readings together, and they can share in
the success of managing their interventions. It is late, so I
apologize if this is useless.

Hello Pete,

Actually I do love your idea. This was something I was really
thinking about when trying to design my research project. I had a
really good idea in regards to the actual research, but I wanted to
make sure I was doing something to drive instruction. My plan is to
conduct a survey about student literacy development and then make a
instruction plan for each student. A big part of this would be to sit
down with each student and talk about my findings and design a plan
for them. I really want them to have a voice in this so they feel more
responsible with their learning and accountable! Thank you for the
great suggestion and the correct terminology that I would call it!
