HDSPMixer runs, and the sliders operate, but nothing else. JRiver mediacenter20 lists the card but will not play to it, and I cannot start jack either. I'm an experienced, retired engineer (digital sonar systems), and I fully understand RME's commercial position, BTW, and would be prepared to have a look at changing the code if that's what it needs. Many thanks.

I am noticing occasional video breakup with the latest nouveau driver in Firefox (example: when encountering any disqus CAPTCHA image during the image selection process.) Breakup is very bad with a resource-intensive app like Google Earth. I use jriver-media-center (28) and have had multiple image fracturing in that app. I have also had a few total system freezes as well this week, suspecting that nouveau may have been the culprit. Hard to know. I tried to move over to the nvidia-470xx-dkms driver with nvidia-470xx-utils today and ran into a problem with "Missing (various) kernel headers for module nvidia/470.103.01. "

I have noticed recently that when I boot to my Linux drive, and play the same exact Youtube music video that my 5.1 surround sounds markedly better than when I am in Windows.......wonder why that is. I mean I love linux music production but everyone I know claims Windows and Mac beats Linux in terms of Music and media. Odd.

Media centers are programs that organize media files like video, audio, and image files on a computer and optimize them for presentation on a TV or other end devices. The user interface is mostly adapted for use on a television. The software also offers an interface for streaming and information about offers that can be added with add-ons. The program can bundle multiple media playback options together on one unified user interface.

There are quite a few software solutions on the market with which you can organize your digital media and prime it for home playback. If you want to link up multiple devices, such as a television with a PC or laptop, to build a personal home theater, then you should ask yourself one question above all: What requirements do I have for my personal media center?

Users consume media in various ways. Some prefer to get a hold of the newest blu-rays, other prefer to stream their series and films online. If you frequently watch films in a group, then an LCD screen in your living room is a comfortable solution. If you fill your travel time with videos, then you would probably use a tablet or smartphone more often. If the entire family wants to enjoy the full benefits of the available offers, then you need software solutions that allow access to multiple devices. Do you want to play your music through the entire apartment while showing your friends pictures from your vacation? This is also possible with the right media center.

The graphical orientation of the TV screen is called the 10-foot user interface. Format and font size are designed to match the TV screen and be easily seen from 10 feet. All media centers that want to serve as alternatives to Kodi offer this type of user interface.

MediaPortal is an open source media center developed specially for Windows. The developer concentrated on the integrated video recorder in particular, which is the unique selling point of the Kodi alternative. For this, you need a TV subscription. Teletext as well as a guide provide information via the television program. The selected films or series can be watched either live or recorded. The program even wakes up the computer when the shows in question are on. An active community provides plugins, for example MP-TVSeries, for organizing your shows on your hard drive. Users access the stream via the home network.

With this information, some general trends can be observed. TV and radio remainthe dominant sources of entertainment. Over The Air (OTA) and Cable TVconsumption is decreasing, streaming services are increasing, and smartphones /tablets are available in most households. Concerning younger viewers, a report by Marketing Charts investigates generic trends between streaming and live TV for viewers under theage of 34 years old. Some sourcesclaimthat that 19-25 year olds spend 29% of their TV content time streaming and 29%watching traditional linear TV. Othersources suggests that traditional TV still has slight edge over streaming services, butindicate that streaming services are, in general, increasing in popularity. Withthese trends in mind, we argue that future media center solutions should focuson content delivery to multiple device types. Clearly the television is king inthis respect, but other devices like smartphones and tablets should beconsidered. Thus, a set-top-box should provide not only the capability to playback video to a large TV screen, but also stream the content to one or morelow-powered mobile devices.

MythTV has long been a strong contender in the Linuxmedia center market. It can use all V4L devices and several network tuners, likethe HDHomeRun. One member of our team has used MythTV to record and watch OTAbroadcasts since 2007. Due to its maturity, MythTV is one of the most featurecomplete solutions on the market. It supports multiple tuners (with some supportfor CableCards), intelligent scheduling with conflict resolution, videotranscoding, commercial flagging, and streaming playback on multiple devices. For the purposes of this review, we installed MythTV 0.28. Since our initialreview, MythTV 0.28.1 was released. Because most Linux distributions packageMythTV by default, installation is fairly trivial; however, it is not errorfree. After installing the software and running the MythTV Backend Setup(mythtv-setup), our tests on Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, and Mythbuntu foundthat the (default) password in mythtv-setup and the MySQL database did notmatch. This mis-configuration later impacted our ability to run both MythWeb andWebFrontend. This is fairly easy to fix using the MySQL command line, or a GUI(like MySQL workbench). Our long-term MythTV user recounts having to manuallyaddress this issue since at least Ubuntu 14.04. After launchingmythtv-setup the user will need to go through the capture card, set videosources, and input connection setup steps at a minimum. During the inputconnection stage, the user will also need to run a channel scan for each inputsource. Representative images of these steps are shown below:

As popular as Windows Media Center is, it has been largely superseded by various superior systems, from XBMC (now known as Kodi) to Plex. But switching from one media center solution to another is no longer something to be overly concerned about. Whereas once you might have been anxious about issues with incompatible tags and having to recollect metadata and album or movie covers, these days such apprehensions are unwarranted.

The default choice for many is probably Kodi, the new name for XBMC. This started as a media center hack for the original Xbox, Microsoft's first console which was basically a locked-down PC. With the release of the Xbox 360, the XBMC was spun off into a full media center app for Linux and Windows PCs, and has proven very popular since. You'll find versions on Android and the Raspberry Pi (we've previously demonstrated how to set up a RaspBMC media center). If the default look and features don't suit, don't worry--skins and plugins are available to extend functionality.
