Our gas. Their billions.
GetUp!
Email,

Right now, the government is facing pressure it hasn't seen in years – and we're closer than ever to fairly taxing gas exports.

Hundreds of thousands of people – from everyday Australians, economists, unions and community groups – are backing 25% tax on gas exports. It's rare to see this kind of agreement from across the political spectrum – from Greens supporters to One Nation voters, and over 95% of GetUp members. Nearly 50,000 of us are leading the way, having already signed our petition calling on the government to act.

Just this morning, I emailed Treasurer Jim Chalmers to let him know.

The message is getting through. But with a government decision expected in the next two weeks, they need to hear from as many of us as possible to make sure they implement it.

Email, we don't have your name on this campaign yet. Will you sign our petition calling on the government to tax gas giants?

Here's why this matters now more than ever:

Gas corporations are making billions exporting Australian gas overseas – with prices inflated by conflict in the Middle East – and are paying next to nothing back. In fact, they receive more than half of Australia's gas for free, export it overseas, and rake in record profits.

Meanwhile, Australians are struggling with higher energy bills, record fuel prices and a cost of living crisis that just keeps getting worse.

A 25% tax on gas exports could raise about $17 billion every year – money that could go towards healthcare, housing affordability, clean energy or cost of living relief. And on top of that, it would also push corporations to supply more gas locally, helping bring prices down.

The Treasurer is weighing up this decision right now, and the gas lobby is pushing back hard. With the budget just weeks away, the decisions being made in the coming days could determine whether gas giants keep pocketing billions – or whether Australians finally get a fair return.

Add your name alongside 50,000 other GetUp members calling on Treasurer Chalmers to introduce a 25% tax on gas exports.

Thanks,
Paul for the GetUp team
