Email,
You know the trick. Coles and Woolies jack up the price of an everyday item, then days later slap a "special" tag on it – at a price higher than it was before. It's totally fake and deliberately misleading – and it's helped fuel their billion-dollar-plus annual profits at our expense.
This week, the ACCC is finally taking Coles to court over exactly this – and they could face fines of over $100 million. Woolies is next.
But rather than own up to their dirty tricks, the supermarket duopoly is fighting back on every front. They're aggressively defending themselves in court and working to undermine new price gouging laws, claiming any government action will only push prices higher. Translation: "If you try to stop us, we'll only rip you off more."
Email, I'm sick of it. And it's time to say enough is enough. Coles and Woolies need to hear from us in record numbers – because while action by courts and government is welcome, real change depends on their customers demanding it.
So Email, will you add your name to our campaign today? We're thousands of Australians who are done being played at the checkout – and demanding the supermarket duopoly cut their crap.Over the next two weeks, the Federal Court will examine whether Coles briefly increased the price of hundreds of everyday products, from pantry staples to household basics, before advertising them as discounted under its "Down Down" promotions. The ACCC alleges that shoppers were shown a higher "was" price that didn't reflect the product's long-standing regular price – and so was "utterly misleading" for consumers.
Former ACCC chair Allan Fels is calling this the "case of the century" – and he's right. If Coles wins, it's a green light – not just for them, but for every big retailer in Australia to keep playing the same dirty game.
Meanwhile, the government has announced new laws to stop the duopoly charging excessive prices compared to their costs, with significant penalties from July this year. It's an important change – if Coles' and Woolies' lobbyists don't manage to stop them coming into force.
This is the moment to demonstrate that there is a strong, undeniable movement for a grocery system that works for people – not just profit margins. That kind of visible, organised pressure is what gives regulators the confidence to act, governments the political cover to strengthen the rules, and forces supermarkets to listen.
So Email, add your name today – and let's keep the pressure on until Australians can trust the price on the shelf. We're done being played at the checkout. Enough is enough.
In solidarity,
Raisa for the GetUp team
