I haven't done much with the keyboard macro feature in Emacs+, as I often use code templates for the same thing. However, someone asked about how they could bind a "template" to an arbitrary key, and I realized that Emacs+ keyboard macros are probably the only way to do that.  One thing I wondered, however, where does it store macros for the "save-kbd-macro" function?  I assume "load-kbd-macro" loads from the same place.

Wherever you want.  See doc.

I wasn't able to find any documentation on this, and when I execute "save-kbd-macro" or "load-kbd-macro", it doesn't ask me where to save or load from, it just does it.

Perhaps a better question would be where is the doc? You used to have a separate web site with fuller documentation. I don't believe that exists now, or it's at a different url. Alternatively, it's on the github site somewhere, but I don't remember where that is.

You have the link to the html doc that has always been there: see the "Engage" discussion.

Ok, thanks for that reminder. Bookmark saved now.

However, what exactly is the "state area"?  It's easy enough to set a specific location for this, but where would I find these files if I didn't set a specific location for them?

I assume that these saved macros would be portable to a new installation?  Every once in a while I have to move to a new laptop, so I'd need to know what to save and restore.
