triggering auto-complete with dot (.)

Greetings,

I just started using emacs-eclim, and it's wonderful! When I use M-x eclim-complete the auto-complete works great, but I would like this to be triggered automatically by the period/dot. Any suggestions? I tried settings this in my emacs home but no luck:

(setq ac-auto-start '1)
