Thanks for all the information you have compiled here. You have
explained things very concisely & clearly. I got more useful nuggets of
info here than any other website I found.
I am a 44 year-old woman living in Maui and seem to be increasingly
sensitive to EMFs, no doubt due to increased exposure over the past
year during which time we moved from the countryside to a town and are
living in a house with smaller rooms, A/C and a unit underneath us.
The worst problem is our bedroom. The electrician went wild and put 8
double sockets in a medium size room, and my husband wired it for a TV
and surround sound system with wires to speakers in other rooms also
(he took the TV, sound system & speakers out after I started having
palpitations). This felt better but I still felt uncomfortable with the
ceiling fan right over the bed (even closer as the bed is so high). I
am now realising that there is more of a problem than just the ceiling
fan and wondering if all that wiring is creating electrical fields that
are affecting me. There is also an ceiling fan in the unit directly
underneath us so there would be wiring under us too. I can't sleep in
that room - my body feels stressed and uncomfortable. Can EMFs connect
up and create a force-field in the entire room?
I developed ringing in my ears 3 months ago (not related to
hearing-loss) and I was interested to hear about the connection between
mercury toxicity and increased sensitivity to EMFs. I had a large
amalgam filling removed just before the ringing started (the dentist
used a rubber dam to avoid ingestions of mercury but I wouldn't be
surprised if I still breathed some fumes).
Anyway, I would be grateful if you or any other member have any
feedback for me. I'm a newbie to this subject.
Thanks,
Aline
Thanks for writing and sharing. Your situation sounds difficult and I
truly empathize. Please be heartened to know that several people who
have been in situations like this have found things that helped them.
>From what you've described of your living quarters, there can be many
factors involved that could be affecting you.
Electrical fields are given off by any wiring that has power fed to it,
even when an appliance is not plugged in to the wiring.
Magnetic fields are given off by wiring that has current running
through it, which is the case when the wiring is powering equipment.
Most appliances give off fields when in use, especially strong magnetic
fields. Magnetic fields tend to be more problematic for those with EHS
than electric fields. And low frequency magnetic fields, like those
from electrical wiring and appliances, can't be shielded without
expensive materials and extensive installation.
Many times, a single wiring circuit provides electricity to more than
one area of a living space. Therefore, electrical usage at one outlet
will cause magnetic fields in the entire circuit, affecting all the
rooms the circuit services. And the greater the number of electrical
loads that the circuit has plugged into it, the more fields are
typically given off.
Modern electrical equipment like sound system amplifiers and TVs also
create a lot of what is called 'electrical noise' or 'dirty
electricity' because many extraneous frequencies are generated by the
complex electrical components. And this noise, usually at higher
frequencies than the 50 Hz or 60 Hz frequency that is used to send
electricity to our homes, is erratic and has a 'spiky' waveform which
is harsher on living systems than smooth waveforms. All these
electrical signals get sent out on wiring directly connected to the
equipment. Wiring can also pick up these signals, then carry and
propagate them, when it is in range of the electromagnetic fields of
the equipment. (We even get a lot of dirty electrical signals carried
into our homes from the noise on the local power grid.)
Electric fans are notorious for giving off strong magnetic fields which
are chaotic and spiky and are usually a big problem for those with EHS.
Having one above and below you is an even rougher situation.
Field sources that are directly above the head, below the feet or
hands, or in front of or behind the heart region of an EHS person tend
to be more problematic than those that are at the same distance but at
other positions, unless a particular organ is more sensitive. The
human energy field configuration is thought to be the reason for this.
And yes, electromagnetic fields do travel and combine with each other;
in the places they intermingle (which are usually throughout a room)
they can amplify or dampen each other depending on the structure of the
field waveforms.
I would recommend turning power off at night to the circuit that feeds
your room and see how you fare. Definitely avoid having an active fan
nearby, as well as any other electrical equipment. Also, try to
situate your bed away from the fan underneath you. Anytime you're
close to a wall, the floor, or the ceiling in an apartment situation,
live wires could be present in them. A meter comes in very handy in
trying to determine where these are by the fields that are coming from
them. Remember, you'll probably need to check a space at different
times because electrical usage changes throughout the day. See the
Environmental Hygiene page for more details on how to electrically
clean up a room.

Getting a restful sleep is very, very important. If your body is
constantly or recurrently stressed by things that bother it, you'll
never get much relief or recuperation, and the body can eventually get
into a chronically stressed fight-or-flight condition which creates
even more problems. Distance from field sources is an important key to
reducing their strength and getting relief, so the first step here is
doing what you can to reduce and eliminate fields in your sleeping
environment.
Regarding your mercury filling removal, mercury vapor is always given
off in the procedure and readily penetrates thin rubber membranes and
body tissues. If the filling is cooled by water and sectioned out in
large pieces instead of just being pulverized with the dental drill,
less vapor is generated. A separate breathing tube through the nose
and air evacuation from the oral chamber to a location you're sealed
off from should be provided during removal. Without these, mercury
vapor exposure is a sure thing.
Tinnitus is a typical EHS and mercury toxic symptom and from what you
wrote the connection is too strong (and typical) to be coincidence in
my experience. A product called NDF has been used by many people to
help get deposited mercury out gently, but it is always an
individualized process and I'd recommend getting a good healer
involved. You may find with an appropriate room setup, EM avoidance
practice, and gentle detoxification and nutritional supplementation
regime that you can reduce your EHS.

There were actually no significant EMF readings at the bed but I am
definitely bothered by proximity of (switched off) ceiling fans. I
read somewhere that metal becomes magnetised by electromagnetic energy
and also that it conducts it (apparently some people have to get rid of
mattresses with metal springs in them) so I can only conclude that
something like this is happening. Do you have any thoughts on this?
I find using a computer pretty uncomfortable these days - I feel
impacted on the front of my body (yes, I know about the chakras or
'energy centers' so that makes sense). However, I notice that EMF
readings are negligible at the distance I sit at so I am guessing that
my body is like a conductor and the energy flows towards me when I am
near the electromagnetic field.
Am I making sense?
I was surprised to see that there is a 'hot spot' at the couch where we
watch TV. It is highest at the floor where it reaches 3 milligauss when
the TV and lights are on (one and a half milligauss on the couch).
There is a constant reading of 1 milligauss at the floor when all
lights and appliances are switched off.
My husband says there is an electrical box under the floor there
(great) and there is also a plug in the wall which has a constant
reading of 2 milligauss (with nothing plugged into it). I also get a
high electrical reading of 100 volts/meter about a foot away from a
dimmer switch near the couch (when it is on). I don't get any
significant electrical readings near any other dimmer switches.
Does this sound like some faulty wiring? Could that be harmful to be
sitting in a field of 2-3 milligauss for long periods of time?
It is feeling increasingly uncomfortable to me.
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge of this subject.
