Dear Colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to invite you to take part in the international
conference

"Economic, Political and Social Crisis in the EU: Challenges and
Opportunities”

organized by Baltic International Academy and its programme "European
Studies”.

The conference will discuss the topical issues of the ongoing crises in
Europe, their consequences and possible re-invention of policies and
economy. Conference offers a unique opportunity for academic world to
exchange views in an open and stimulating environment.

Both in Europe and in Latvia the economic and financial crisis has been deep
and the recovery is acknowledged to be slow. Latvia was confronted with the
need of fiscal consolidation during the crises as one of the first member
states in the EU and many of other states had to do the same. Global
competitiveness has been eroded in major nations and the Euro has been
weakened. There is an overall need to restore discipline and confidence on
the way of further integration of the EU and its enlargement.

Many European policies appear to need a 're-invention': the EU strategy "
Europe 2020”,  financial discipline, the EU Economic Union, the EU’s role as
a global player in the world.
Participants of the conference are invited to discuss a wide range of
current issues:
Europe’s response to the global crisis, the need for a more social European
Union, market integration and competition policy, energy security, the
possibility for the EU to achieve a high-profile foreign policy, Europe’s
identity, European enlargement visions, ongoing problems of democratic
legitimization and a role of governments, institutions and investors in the
context of the EU integration.
Looking forward to receive your proposals (ca. 15 minutes + panel discussion
including participants of the whole panel).
The conference will take place on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 10.00 am.
Venue: European Information Center / room 207, Baltic International Academy,
Lomonosova 1, Riga.

Deadline for abstracts – 26 March 2012. Conference language – English.
