Dear Naturalists,

With regard to our feeding of grey jays, I received an inquiry about how we avoid trouble with bears during summer.

Our house is built on a slope so that we enter on the north side onto our main floor but on the south side we enter into the basement.  On the south side of the house we have a deck that extends off the main floor.  Under the deck is our dog yard, discouraging bears.  A bear could take the walkway around the house from the north side but, so far, no bear has done that.  We have had a marten walk around the house on the walkway now and then, and a fox, but never a bear.  (Squirrels and chipmunks take the walkway regularly, and deer mice.)  The walkway has a gate at the deck and the gate is always closed.

So, the end result is that we can put food out for our jays and the squirrels and chipmunks and deer mice share as well.

PS   The grey jay parents brought 2 youngsters to the feeder this afternoon.
